After seven years in hiding, Harmony Korine is back with the second film of what he calls his “Florida Trilogy:” The Beach Bum.

In this dark comedy, McConaughey plays Moondog, a Miami-based poet who has gone off the deep-end and has immersed himself in a world of non-stop partying; alcohol, drugs, sex and all.

Also starring are Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Stefania LaVie Owen, Jimmy Buffet, Zac Efron, and Martin Lawrence.

The film is scheduled for release on March 22, 2019.

The first trailer has been released. Check it out!

This might be a disaster, but in any case it’ll be memorable. Always excited for a Korine film!

Based on the results of an early test screening, I can see McConaughey getting awards attention for this film. And if the film’s really good, I can see Efron, Fisher, and Lawrence getting some attention as well.

However, I don’t see this film getting any awards attention outside of the acting categories.

Ugh!!! I am NOT looking forward to this film at all. Harmony Korine is pure trash; Gummo was one of the worst films I have ever seen in my life!!! Delinquent kids killing cats and old ladies is a form of social commentary?! Give me a freaking break!!!!

Anyway, WHY would Matthew McConaughey sign on for a role in a film like this?! It’s these bum roles that made him a laughing stock a decade ago.

Don’t let the trailer deceive you. If you look at the MPAA rating, one of the reasons it’s rated R is because of “disturbing bloody violence” and “strong sexual material including menace.” That right there tells you that we’re going to be seeing more than just typical bum stuff. Is it going to be the “Big Lebowski” of the 2010s? Probably not. The Coen Brothers are SO hard to beat. But still…

Still, I’ve never been a fan of Harmony Korine and all I’ve seen so far makes me think we’re getting the same old crap. He’s not an auteur; he’s a troll. I mean, the man was once kicked off of David Letterman’s show for rummaging through Meryl Streep’s purse (true story!!)

And… looking at the MPAA rating shown in the new trailer, it looks like they re-cut the film and took out the “disturbing bloody violence” and “strong sexual material including menace.” That argument of mine quoted above is no longer valid. Whether that’s for better or for worse is yet to be determined.

Well, I think we know the answer to that now. Apparently Korine originally wrote the character with Gary Oldman in mind, but Oldman turned it down.

I… really want to see Oldman in this movie now. But I know I can’t. 🙁

Thank you! How in the fuck is this untalented idiot always getting green light to make more awful movies? The privilege… Ugh…

The movie premiered at SXSW on March 9, and reviews are starting to come out.

So far, the movie has a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reception seems to be polarizing, with top critics viewing the film much more favorably (at 80%) than their amateur counterparts (at 46%).

The movie won’t be released nationwide until March 29, so this could easily change.

I highly doubt it. Harmony Korine’s always been controversial amongst critics and cinephiles. Even Spring Breakers has its fair share of haters.
