I’m interested to know if any actress has won Best Actress at the Oscars while miming considerably in a musical or drama in recent Oscar history? Let’s say last 50 years.
Why do I ask?
I see that Viola Davis is hot favourite for Best Actress this year, yet she sings very little in the film. Finally, what is the general consensus on miming in Oscar movies of late by Oscar voters / critics? Does it hurt Viola’s chances?
Thanks

But she gave one of the greatest performances in cinema history.

Viola Davis wouldn’t make a bad winner but her role size could hurt her in the end.

People like Freddy Mercury, Edith Piaf, (Judy Garland *cough*cough*) have completely singular, once in a lifetime voices, that’s literally why they were famous. The expectation that an actor should even attempt to replicate that, to me, is like saying no actor should place a real person unless they look exactly like them. It’s a nice idea, sure, but so unrealistic to not even be a discussion.
PS – yes, I’m saying Renee should’ve lipsynced and the movie would’ve been better if she had. She has a nice voice, but it’s hard to understand how memorable Garland’s voice and talent was without hearing it

Agreed. I think it’s nice that there are some cases when the actor re-records the songs but if they don’t, it doesn’t take away from the performance as a whole.
Bassett in What’s Love Got to Do with It is loved around here despite the lip-synching.
