Yeah so saw this and can happily report that it isnt the worst movie of all time. It was pretty much the mediocre feel good milquetoast oscar bait that comes every season.
But yeah, I didn’t really find much fault in direction or in performances of amy or glenn. In fact they were best parts of it. Honestly the worst part of the movie was JD Vance. His character is an irredeemable douchebag. When he was getting beaten up I was cheering for the bullies.
As a MAGA origin story its a very first world problems movie but I saw pundits trying to say that this is an “all lives matter” movie which couldnt be any further from truth. It doesnt even touch on those issues at all. Just goes to show that critics are not always reviewing things on screen.
I can see the backlash to the backlash forming much like Green Book as this film is very relatable to people who dont live in high rises on the coasts.

November 26, 2020 at 1:29 am #1203874329This movie really should have gone from A to Z- it’s an important subject matter that has some resonance and good acting from Close but it doesn’t really explore the root causes of Bev’s addiction. It goes through the motions without explaining things. Adams was miscast too as she still looks too young and chirpy for the character. I don’t know why people think Close was hammy, I don’t think she ever went over the top. Her character is underdeveloped, the whole script is.

(Don’t know if this is true, haven’t seen the movie, read the book and I don’t know much about the author. Somebody told me he was on Tucker Carlson’s show yesterday discussing that the reviews may have been inspired more as personal attacks on him than the film.)
The reviews I have read don’t appear to be politically motivated, the film does not touch on Trump although he is a constant elephant in my mind watching it as I am a political junkie.

They’re okay (6.4 on iMDB, 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.9 on Metacritic) but for a film with such awful reviews they needed to be better. For context, Green Book has an 8.2/10 on iMDB and a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, Bohemian Rhapsody has an 8/10 on iMDB and an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Joker has an 8.5/10 on iMDB, an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a whopping 9/10 on Metacritic. Flopbilly needed to do better than those 3 films to have a chance and instead it’s doing significantly worse.

I’m kind of feeling this way too. The worst aspect of the film was the jarring pacing and editing, and how misplaced nearly all of the time jumps were.

Netflix should ask HFPA to switch categories. Adams would be a lock for GG nom in comedy actress.

This. I’d like anyone insisting that the GP is loving this to explain why the so-called positive audience reviews are mediocre at best. At best, there is a consensus that it’s bland and nothing special. There is a small minority of people who are actual fans, unlike with Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, both of which struck a chord. This will be forgotten in a month. It’s only shot is Close.

here is the bias from variety
With Black Lives Matter gaining significant traction, a film about a Caucasian venture capitalist’s upbringing doesn’t feel exactly well-timed in our climate. Despite two magnificent actresses like Amy Adams and Glenn Close at the helm, director Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy” may face trouble on the awards circuit.
For a story that hones in on the “Appalachian values” and the “American dream,” this is likely to be eaten up by a certain 70 million-person demographic, with a few select Academy members. For the rest of the entertainment-watching world, this looks like a failure to read the room, in an effort to provide another example that “all lives matter” and there are “very fine people on both sides.”

ReplyCopy URLNovember 26, 2020 at 12:24 pm #1203875669I actually think that the controversy over Glenn’s comments about Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar is inadvertently serving as a form of publicity for Hillbilly Elegy LOL. There’s been several articles about the controversy already. Look at this particular article about the controversy — at the end it says “Hillbilly Elegy is on Netflix now”.

That’s… Not commenting on the movie at all… It’s literally saying “this might lose out on awards because of X external factor”…

November 26, 2020 at 1:43 pm #1203875807Ok. I watched the movie last night.
It’s far from good but it’s not terrible.
I was impressed by Basso’s performance. He’s the lead without a doubt. Amy is supporting, even though she is heavily on screen of the first half. I liked her performance. It’s over the top but it portraited a woman on the verge of collapse.
On the other hand, Glenn role is little cartoonish, but in the end it achieved much depth. I find it very ironic that, despite she is a very importante role in the movie, she has no proper death scene.
