The odd thing is more people are talking about this movie than any of the ones that received good reviews.
Probably because only one of those films (Chicago 7) is widely avaliable. In fact, I think that film is a much closer comparison to Green Book, due to it’s very polarizing reception.

That’s only one review though. I’ve seen plenty of reviews and very few have included politics as a criticism. In fact, more reviews than not have included the lack of politics as a criticism.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 26, 2020 at 4:48 pm #1203876155The film didn’t move mountains but it’s FARRR from the worst of the year. I mean, seriously, the hatred for the film is TOTAL NUTS. The lousy writing and the heavy-handed direction might have dragged the movie at times but there were certainly moments where I was on the verge of crying because of the struggles of the character. The score amplifies everything and provides the emotional driving force. Amy Adams free-falled aimlessly during the first few minutes (probably because there was no material to ground her) but on the next half, wow her performance was STUNNING!!! The scene in the motel room???? Best Actress. Glenn Close and Haley Bennett were standouts as well. Close giving Mawmaw enough depth beyond the lapses of the writing is a testament of her talent as an actress.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 26, 2020 at 7:02 pm #1203876330I’m looking at the audience scores for Flopbilly Elegy. They’re okay (6.4 on iMDB, 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.9 on Metacritic) but for a film with such awful reviews they needed to be better. For context, Green Book has an 8.2/10 on iMDB and a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, Bohemian Rhapsody has an 8/10 on iMDB and an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Joker has an 8.5/10 on iMDB, an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a whopping 9/10 on Metacritic. Flopbilly needed to do better than those 3 films to have a chance and instead it’s doing significantly worse.
The issue with this is that you are once again comparing movies from different years. We all know that this year is like no other.
Trial of the Chicago 7, arguably top 5 in BP race has a 7.9 on imdb, 7.6 MC, and a 90 on rottentomatoes. It only has 1,000 ratings on RT so safe to say that that score is inflated especially judging from reactions elsewhere online. And hillbilly has higher MC audience score than trial!

I have to disagree with you there. First boring Zimmer score I’ve ever heard.

Are you talking about the audience score? Because over 1,000 verified user reviews is perfectly reasonable for any film, much less a film that was at one point Top 2 on Netflix. By the way, Hillbilly Elegy, despite being #1 on Netflix right now (so, higher than Chicago 7 was) has a whopping 303 user reviews.
The issue with this is that you are once again comparing movies from different years. We all know that this year is like no other.
My purpose was not really to compare those movies. What I was trying to say is that, in order to do what Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Joker did and overcome a less-than-stellar critical reception to do well at the Academy Awards, Hillbilly Elegy needed to receive far better reactions from audiences than those 3 films did. And instead, it did worse. The general audiences are not raving over this film, they’re giving it a resounding “meh”.
And hillbilly has higher MC audience score than trial!
The Room also has a higher Metacritic user score than Star Wars The Last Jedi. I don’t really think the Metacritic user review score counts for much.

This is a testament to the failure of Ron Howard’s direction and Vanessa Taylor’s screenplay. It should have been depressing as hell, but they were so scared of alienating audiences that they sanded off all of the hard edges.

November 27, 2020 at 7:32 am #1203877386Just saw it. It wasn’t that bad but not best I think. Just okay. Yes, it’s true Adams is not gonna get nominated for anything based on her performance here but Glenn Close should. Her car-scene (that calculator thing) was fantastic.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 27, 2020 at 7:36 am #1203877400Score was terrible and felt out of place. Sometimes I thought I was watching some epic adventure drama but it’s just Glenn Close getting out of the hospital.
