Was expecting a trainwreck based on RT score but it was actually moving. It’s just a simple family movie that has good visuals but average writing. I agree that JD is portrayed as too much of a hero.

Amy wasn’t bad in my opinion, her acting seemed realistic for someone struggling with addiction. Glenn was terrific as usual and should be nominated.

I actually find the film “inspiring” especially JD’s perseverance to fight against all odds and his love for his own roots. Glenn Close’s Mamaw is the kind of grandma that I wish I had.

The film felt like a great Lifetime presentation. I thought Close and Adams were good; and the makeup was flawless. I also enjoyed the score.

    Predicted noms:

    Supporting Actress – Close
    Original Score
    Makeup & Hairstyling

I agree. I find the score very relaxing especially during the opening. I love country music so that’s fits. I might find that score and listen while trimming my herbs haha.

I think the worst thing I can say about the film is that it never really rose to the cinematic level I hoped it would reach. In Ron Howard’s hands, there was such a blandness and artificial quality surrounding it. He doesn’t understand the milieu at all, and it shows. If this had been directed by someone like Debra Granik, for example, I think the content would have soared, and the world-building would have felt more authentic. But did this film deserve 0 and 30 weighted reviews, or a 39 score on Metacritic? Absolutely not. It’s offensive that critics had this level of agenda-baiting on tap due to its awful, Trump-loving subject matter. That’s more obnoxious than anything I saw in this film. It was only five points higher than “The War with Grandpa,” for christsakes! The film should have settled into the low 60s at best. It reminds me of those “Oprah Winfrey Presents” films of the early aughts amped up a bit for streaming (and an Al Gore mention thrown in for good measure). Back then, it would have likely won some acting Emmys and television movie, and that would have been that. The sentimentality of that era is long gone now, so I can see why this kind of earnestness doesn’t play well with some audiences. Glenn Close saved the film from itself with the performance that felt the most lived-in and vital. There wasn’t enough of her, unfortunately, and the haphazard editing of the film was actively working against her in stretches. Amy Adams felt both overcooked and undercooked, if that’s possible. Seeing the photos of the real-life Bev and Mamaw at the end credits was jaw-dropping. Like, the resemblances were so uncanny, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The makeup/hairstyling team has already earned its Oscar nomination next year. Gabriel Basso was fine, though I was more impressed with the younger actor playing J.D. He had some great scenework opposite Close, especially the car scene with the graphing calculator. Haley Bennett was excellent in her limited screentime. I wanted to see more of her story play itself out. I hope that Close goes the distance, and I think she will, since I’m anticipating a backlash to the backlash setting in at some point. Supporting actress and makeup/hairstyling seem both sufficient and attainable to me.

Oh please this movie was awful, truly truly awful, Adams and Close deserved way better, Adams was not good at all, but Close did give a really genuine performance, they deserved better! Also that script is just pure shit

If anything an average of 39 is nice for this patronizing and sexist trash.

Amy and Glenn did try their best but there is not much they can do to elevate shit writing, especially when they are directed so poorly.

I saw this last night. This was not AWFUL at all. It was an run of the mill movie, but that doesn’t mean it was awful. Glenn was great (she is such a fantastic versatile actress. To think this is the same woman from Dangerous Liaisons and Fatal Actress is unbelievable. She will get the Oscar nomination at least). Amy was good. The cinematography and score all good. make up fantastic. The film wasn’t great, but did way too much with horrible reviews. This would be a good tv movie.

    Just watched it.

I’m European and I don’t know anything about Appalachia or the controversy surrounding the novel and I thoroughly enjoyed this as a stand alone film, very moving. (Although a bit hammy in parts)

Amy & Glenn were fantastic! and shoutout to Haley Bennett who was the backbone of the film

Truly baffled by the atrocious RT score.

    7/10

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Well, it looks like this film is the most divisive film of 2020. 30% on RT with an audience score of 81%</p>
