I’m starting to think Amy and Glenn did something terrible to you, for you to be rooting so much against this movie…
October 15, 2020 at 8:16 am #1203780365even with something like Mank (which I am actually more interested in than Judas and the Black Messiah and Respect due to the story and who is directing it) and its trailer looked quite inferior.
The Mank trailer is not objectively bad. It just makes a stylistic choice that you don’t like.
The others are bad because the movies are likely going to be bad. It’s not that Netflix suddenly forgot how to cut a trailer – as I and others have mentioned, they cut some incredible ones only last year – it’s that their slate of movies isn’t as strong. The trailers for movies that look better (teaser aside, the full final trailer for Chicago 7 is good) are better.

LOL I have nothing against Amy and Glenn. I just hate Ron Howard.
And I’m sorry, the trailer looks bad. I had this film in Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay before the trailer.

I never said it looked good? I liked it but I understand why people didn’t. Also, why do you hate Ron Howard? I understand you’re not a fan, but hate is a very strong word.
October 15, 2020 at 9:04 am #1203780493Yes the movie may be bad.
Yes Amy Adams looks to me to be miscast. Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz, Kate Winslet, Rebecca Hall, Rosamund Pike would be a better casting choice for meI actually disagree. Out of all the actresses you listed, I think only Adams will get the Americana of the character. I don’t see how any of the above actresses except for Hall could really get down and dirty and capture the essence of that region and actually understand it the way Adams can. Sure Adams isn’t from that region either, but as an American I bet she gets it better than those actress. I’m seriously confused by Pike and Weisz being included as someone fitting the role better. I love Weisz, but she wasn’t even persuasive as an American art student in Labute’s The Shape of Things. Too much posturing like most Brit actors. Watts…I know she’s done some non-glam roles like her Oscar-nominated one, but I just don’t see her being able to play trailer trash at all. Adams, I definitely can as she played similar roles before.
People acting like there are a bunch of acclaimed films this year lol. like 4/5 of predicted best actress lineup are films in the 60s. There isnt exactly a wide selection of films to choose from here. A middlebrow oscar bait starring overdue actresses and a legendary director is the easiest prediction to make all 2020.
Serious question, what does age of the Best Actress contenders have to do with whether there are a bunch of acclaimed films?
Also, for the rest of the thread, I expected cheesy. It’s a Ron Howard film afterall. He’s not very sophisticated. This won’t be a more mainstream and more dialogue-heavy version of The Rider. This will something much cheesier and melodramatic and with unintentionally clunky dialogue.
It ain’t all his fault. The source material ain’t no masterpiece despite the author thinking he was writing a Pulitzer-prize winning novel as opposed to a self-important false story with shaky politics and judgments containing the pretentious word “Elegy” combined with “Hillbilly”.
October 15, 2020 at 9:41 am #1203780592Not only by Gold Derby. Several people online disliked the teaser but like I said, it faded away with the final trailer and reviews. And WTF are you talking about YouTube?! The reactions on there are moslty positive. It literally has six thousand likes and only about two hundred dislikes. And comments are extremely positive, specially towards Amy and Glenn.
The only praise is for the two actresses, with 95% of the comments filled with people yelling about Amy and Glenn’s snubs. Have you looked at other uploads of the trailer outside Netflix’s? Like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiZy8f_Gf2I. There are plenty of comments calling it Oscar bait, melodramatic, and outdated, and several complaining about the stereotyped depiction of rural southerners.
Not sure how apt the comparisons to Green Book/Bohemian Rhapsody/etc. are- those movies somehow struck a chord with the academy by virtue of some components that film twitter and critics did not appreciate. Literally the only thing keeping Hillbilly Elegy afloat is the fact that people are clamoring for Amy and Glenn to win. If you replaced those two with any less-beloved actresses, this would be dead in the water. It’s a shame that what appears to be a mediocre adaptation of a garbage book is going to end up being rewarded because of everything but its quality…
October 15, 2020 at 9:58 am #1203780608The Mank trailer wasn’t BAD as in OMG this was Razzie worthy it just didn’t really convey the film quite well.
I’m still interested in watching Mank (and it’s probably going to be one of my favourite films of the year) but it was just cut weirdly and the trailer ironically was inferior to that of Respect‘s and also Judas and the Black Messiah‘s (although no trailer is overcoming that one imo).
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
October 15, 2020 at 10:02 am #1203780620‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ still has the best trailer BY FAR! No trailer will beat that one and that’s a promise.

October 15, 2020 at 11:31 am #1203780810Okay, I’ve re-watched the trailer. Amy Adam was incredible based on the trailer.
Glenn was a bit messy. I was one person that fought for Glenn to be nominated for The Wife but the trailer made it seem like she was trying too hard. Glenn is most affective when there is less to say. One perfect example of this is in The Wife. The scene where her husband was giving the speech, Glenn’s reaction alone in that scene is why I wanted her to be nominated for The Wife. Of course, I will see the film for myself.
The music really ruined the film. It looks like an early 90s drama that was made for the Oscars. Hopefully they tone it down for the next trailer.
October 15, 2020 at 11:39 am #1203780827I don’t know what was more tryhard. This trailer for an Oscar or my college application essay.

I agree, but I think her last two roles that she was nominated for was a little too on the subtle side for Academy audiences. I think this messy is the type of performance they’ll eat up in “supporting”. Look at some of the recent past winners.

I actually disagree with this. The only moment where she was loud was in her confrontation with Amy. Most of her scenes where either emotional or subtle. Also, her voice was amazing.

She just might “Melissa Leo” it. I guess that is a good thing.

And Hans Zimmer did the score!
