Wow. Those reviews are rough. It seems like it’s not Close’s time yet.

If Glenn doesn’t win, it’s time for the Academy to give her an honorary award.

Schadenfreude – pleasure derived by someone from another person’s misfortune.

LMFAO, this movie flopping is karma for Glenn Close making Albert Nobbs.

This isn’t Oscar worthy but I did not expect such poor critical reception. Imagine if they had kept all the political stuff in. Yikes. Glenn should sweep but this is a big obstacle. If it wasn’t for Seyfried, she’d remain unbothered but now.. *sighs*

I honestly think they wouldn’t have minded it if they had a director who really got the area and the people and knew how to film it like a stark reality sort of thing. I mean a cheesy Ron Howard melodrama with his saccharine tastes about “hillbilly” country with a score by Hans Zimmer? What does Zimmer know about the music from that area? This project was so misguided from the get-go.

I see Razzies in its future.

But seriously poor Glenn is not winning for this no matter how good she is. I think she’s on shaky grounds even for a nom.

The reason the book was critically acclaimed in the first place is because it presents a raw, no-strings-attached inside look into the white working class, the demographic that made Donald Trump’s election possible. This is a book that is supposed to make people think hard, and to spark productive discussions between people across the political spectrum.

If the critics are to believed, then it appears that Ron Howard went out of his way to remove as much of that theme as possible. The reason he did it doesn’t matter; either way the final product is a contrived, pointless mess that both disrespects the community it tries to portray and robs audiences of the opportunity to see a film that would otherwise have been virtually one-of-a-kind amidst the current political atmosphere.

Again, if the critics are to be believed, the implications of this film are so bad that I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets completely snubbed at the Oscars. Nor would I be surprised if it ends up contending at the Razzies.

To be honest now that I think of it we should have been able to tell how badly received this film was going to be from this clip.

Yeah I was just joking about that scene.

My question remains: Why did they accept to do this with the reaction it’s having?

    OMG. This.

@kuyaalb: Hillbilly Elegy is getting worse reviews than a movie about Santa Claus becoming a military contractor and fighting an assassin hired by a naughty 12-year-old who got coal in his stocking.

I don’t think the script was ready at the time they signed up. They got cast weeks after the 2019 Oscars.

    OMG. This.

That’s how you know that the reviews aren’t really about the movie itself.
