This was extremely difficult, and I could not even do all categories! I may or may not return to do the performances… just too many to comb through. The order here does not matter much; the likelihood of any of this making the final list is slim-to-none lol. I considered for a while limiting myself to just a single decade of cinema, but that just wouldn’t feel right. So have this, I guess!

Also, these would be totally different lists if you asked me next month. Too much good cinema, folks!

    PICTURE
    1. Lola Montès
    2. Cléo from 5 to 7

    DIRECTOR
    1. Edward Yang, A Confucian Confusion
    2. Sergei Eisenstein, Strike
    3. Jacques Rivette, Noroît
    4. Barbara Loden, Wanda
    5. Hou Hsiao-hsien, The Assassin
    6. Samuel Armstrong, James Algar, Bill Roberts, Paul Satterfield, Ben Sharpsteen, David D. Hand, Hamilton Luske, Jim Handley, Ford Beebe, T. Hee, Norman Ferguson, and Wilfred Jackson, Fantasia
    7. Abbas Kiarostami, The Wind Will Carry Us
    8. Joshua Oppenheimer, The Look of Silence
    9. Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey
