The 2017 recipients for honorary Oscars will probably be announced later this month. Who are the most likely candidates this year for the life achievement award, Hersholt humanitarian award, and Thalberg award?

There is always at least one actor chosen, and this year’s governors for that branch are Laura Dern, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tom Hanks. Knowing that info might help in making a prediction.

We’ve assembled a list of possibilities in the post below, but feel free to add more. Hopefully the governors will not choose any past winners except for Hersholt and Thalberg.

Olivia De Havilland I do believe.

Two competitive Oscar wins and her health is enough.

I also seriously doubt Olivia nor her estate would want another Oscar for the simple reason that the Academy would likely make her sign a waiver for Ownership. This would retroactively cover her previous Oscars which were given prior to their controversial auction rules prohibiting the sale of any Oscars post 1950. I believe this is what happened to Mary Pickford when she got an honorary one in the 70’s.

In most people’ eyes, she had one memorable role. It’s never going to happen over legends and their legendary film careers. I mean we have to see the difference between a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT and a GREAT PERFORMANCE WHICH WAS SNUBBED BY THE ACADEMY. I’ll help – Grier is the second category.

Pam Grier’s filmography in the 70s made her an icon. Jackie Brown was paying homage to her iconography. Hal Needham a stuntman turned director made shit movies turning Burt Reynolds into a joke. They honored him with an honorary before he died. Jackie Chan whose claim to fame stateside is an urban buddy cop franchise also was deemed suitable for recognition. Don’t minimize Grier because you’re unfamiliar with her outside Jackie Brown.

Pam Grier is known as THE female hero of the 70s. She was completely ground breaking. I think she would be deserving.
