Jared Leto is now Razzie nominated for this! Imagine if he goes for the double whammy tomorrow.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 13, 2022 at 4:00 am #1204799313Finally saw HoG. It’s hard to believe it’s a film made by Ridley Scott. You have a story about a power, family, fashion and Italy and you come up with something like this? It felt more like they were fighting over a grocery store. The portrayal of Italians was a caricature. The strange selections of songs appearing out of nowhere was ridiculous.
I did like the cinematography but the editing was awful. When it comes to acting, I think Adam Driver was the only good one. But he was playing a bland character, and the screenplay should have dealt with that better. Gaga was uneven and inconsistent. She was good in some separate scenes but as a whole the role fell apart.
And I don’t get the accents, why were they speaking English with Italian accent in the first place? We know the characters are speaking Italian, but it’s an American film, hence English. Why mix it? It only adds additional distraction to already awkward interaction between actors (sometimes painful to watch). A few years from now, when emotions among some are over, it will be a head scratcher how it was even in discussion for awards, best actress included.
February 13, 2022 at 4:29 am #1204799317The problem with HOG is that it should have been a Miniseries and if they were adamant to make it a film, they could have lost 20 minutes and made it crisp.

I actually thought he was the worst. (Hayek did not have enough material but Driver did)

My assumption is that he was supposed to play a guy with no charisma, but a little charming…

Patrizia and Maurizio have given interviews in English and lives in the US for a time. Speaking English with Italian accents makes total sense for the film. Gaga is playing a character who is from Northern Italy, and a different class from the Gucci family. Adam Driver mentions his mother was German, which would give him a different accent from other people in his family. Sorry, but your criticism just don’t hold water. If Gaga follows up Gucci with good performances people will understand why it had Best Actress buzz.

Sorry, but they didn’t speak to each other in English with Italian accent.

The characters in The Last Duel didn’t speak English in British accents to each other in 14th century France either. It’s a movie.

Exactly, and following your logic (and the logic in HoG) the actors should speak in English with French accent. I haven’t seen Last Duel – do they? If yes, it must sound ridiculous.

TLD is all over the place, and only one or two people have a French accent. Movies are not documentaries, and Patrizia and Maurizio did speak English, gave interviews in English and spoke to people like Anna Wintour and Tom Ford in English. The choice made the most sense for a big budget film from Hollywood. If it was made by an Italian film studio then they would speak Italian.

I understand that is not a documentary. The best solution is when actors speak in the native language of the characters they play. But of course it is not doable with an American movie taking place in Italy. So they should speak standard English, every viewer will know that they actually Italian speaking Italian. A hybrid – speaking English with Italian accent makes an impression that characters are talking to each other in a language that is foreign to them. To me it is just weird.

It’s semi-realistic. At the end of the day the accents are more authentic than no accents.

Well, I’m not questioning that when they spoke English they spoke it with Italian accent. What I’m saying is that they did not speak to each other in English with Italian accent. The language that they spoke to each other was their native language that had no foreign accent. Unlike in the movie, which suggests that they spoke in a language that was foreign to them.
Anyway, it’s not the biggest problem of HoG. I’m sure that if the had taken more time, found a better screenwriter and Ridley Scott wasn’t distracted by other projects it would have been a much better film.
February 17, 2022 at 9:45 am #1204806695Apparently there’s rumor about Gaga possibly starring in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby. Does anyone know anything about it? Can’t find any info on this project whatsoever.
Any info on this project?
