I don’t know how they decide which scenes to show for each actor during nominations, but it really makes no sense to me how they choose them. Most of these performances have standout scenes that we all think of but it’s almost like the person who selects them is doing so at random.

Some that came to mind from last night’s ceremony-
Colman: her scene is kinda funny but hardly memorable for her performance in it
    Viggo: totally random scene
Cooper: talking with Gaga on the parking lot early in the film
Malek: singing at the piano (this one felt especially weird because as we all know he’s not even actually singing)
Bale: 4th wall break at the end of the movie

Those were just some I thought were odd choices. I don’t know if anyone else feels the same way/thinks this.

Some were terrible. I mentioned this on another thread too. Aparicio had better than the roof scene. Colman’s clip was dominated by Rachel Weisz.

I agree. Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Viggo clips were meh.

Glenn’s was horrible. There were much better clips they could’ve used. I don’t care for Viggo’s either. Amy’s was ok-not as bad as the other two.

Even Glenn wasn’t moved by her own clip. You can tell.

If  u haven’t watched The Favourite yet  you can tell Colman was supporting than leading based on her Oscar clip.

Some clips were definitely odd. These were some of the ones I was surprised with the most:

    1. Grant: His closing scene was amazing. I think they showed it at the SAGs. That was his winning clip. The clip he got didn’t really do his performance much justice.
    2. Close: She had so many amazing scenes and yet this is what they go with. I wasn’t pleased with the “I’m a king maker” SAG clip either, but even that one was better than this.
    3. Colman: It was a funny clip but not the best to showcase her performance. If they didn’t want to go with the “Look at me” clip, they should’ve gone with her watching Lady Sarah dancing. That was a MOMENT.
    4. Cooper: I would’ve liked his scene at rehab talking about his suicide attempt better. This was more of an ensemble clip (Considering that the ASIB ensemble is just two actos really).

I actually liked Bale’s a lot. I think he got one of the best clips along Melissa and Willem. Malek doesn’t really count because really, he had no Oscar scene at all. So the best they could do was to ride Queen’s wave and give him a singing moment because he had nothing else going on.

The clips were routinely bad, but we should be grateful that they were included at all.

Per usual, I was so confused with their choices. I guess Amy’s was good, but the Two Times was an Oscar moment. Bale’s was perfect, but I think his fourth wall monologue would’ve been phenomenal. Cooper’s should’ve been the garage or rehab (who thought of the parking lot who the hell knows). Malek’s showed the fact that the music has been driving him this entire race, not the performance. Olivia’s was pretty good, but I think the close your eyes or the ending scenes would’ve been more powerful. I don’t remember Glenn’s, so that’s a problem. Gaga’s should’ve been the rehab or the bathtub, but I could go along with what they chose. King’s highlighted her Oscar moment perfectly. Still haven’t watched CYEFM, but that scene seemed to be powerful or what I’ve heard about the cat (RIP). There were better Emma scenes to show.

Also got banned because...reasons? So, I guess ciao.

They really chose well to put Colman in lead. Weisz or Stone would have lost against Close. It would have been easier to pick either Weisz or Stone on account of them being more famous.

Pantheon of acting: Uta / Elizabeth / Richard / Sandy (Virginia Woolf), Bibi / Liv (Persona), Sandrine (La Ceremonie), Brie (Short Term 12), Jodie (Silence of the Lambs), Jodie (Killing Eve), Eva (Penny Dreadful), Timothée (CMBYN), Lupita (Us)

Some clips were not what I or you would have chosen, but I think as a rule, you should not be allowed to use the final scene of a film (Bale, Close) or a scene in which someone is either not really seen or heard (Aparicio, Malek) and those are just the lead categories.

While I respect the decision not to automatically go for the biggest acting scenes like they have in the past, no matter how spoilerific they were or how poorly they worked out of context, I still think they could’ve done a better job of showcasing the actors’ work within those limits. The “look at me” scene for Colman would’ve worked perfectly (it’s both impressive and early enough in the film not to spoil things), and the early-ish scene in Roma where Cleo confides in Sofía about her pregnancy would’ve been fine for Yalitza. You can’t have random clips for all the other Best Actress nominees and then choose the most dramatic scene for McCarthy, it’s not fair. And at least show Malek talking instead of lip-syncing for Christ’s sake!

Not sure why this is in this thread, but yeah I agree they took a risk and it paid off. An even better risk would’ve been promoting both Colman and Stone as lead, and then Weisz would’ve had a better shot at winning.
