The advantage was with Mystic River, which received more Oscar noms.
Penn was on his 4th nomination to Bill’s first.
Depp’s win? hmmmI think they were waiting for just the right high profile film to reward him with since Fast Times.

ReplyCopy URLOctober 9, 2019 at 11:24 am #1203129683I think Penn benefited from two factors: being in a massive BP nominee directed by the legend Clint Eastwood; and considered overdue at the time. That year was extremely weird with Depp suddenly winning SAG against their usual trend to award veterans; and Murray sudden won at BAFTA. However, such a split wasn’t rare back then and Penn could fully sweep if he were to contend now.

2.Mystic River was very well received by AMPAS members.
3.The Best Actor nominations is kind of weak. Even Cruise, Nicholson or Crowe are included, it’s still weak.
4.Penn is so overdue.

October 9, 2019 at 11:49 am #1203129706I saw Mystic River recently and Sean Penn is obviously brilliant in it but the thing which bugs is that maybe Mystic River was a 3 men esemble and it seemed that all 3 of Tim Robbins,Kevin Bacon,Sean Penn were lead or it was all in supporting kind of situation like The Big Short and Spotlight.
Well, imo Bill Murray deserved it more and boy is Sean Penn killer of comebacks.Bill Murray in 2004 and Mickey Rourke in 2009.

Penn gives us a technical marvel of acting in Milk.

It was a surprise, even with his oscar/globe noms and BAFTA win. Johnny is ok, but
I like to think it was more a tribute to Gore Verbinski.ReplyCopy URLDo Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Philip K Dick Blade RunnerOctober 9, 2019 at 6:18 pm #1203130106Kind of sad remembering how Deep was nominated for an Oscar and won at SAG for that first movie. Jack Sparrow used to be so cool. Now he’s a Razzie nominated character.
Has any other actor ever been nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie for playing the same character? I know it’s never happened for the same film.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 9, 2019 at 6:30 pm #1203130118Not an Oscar but a GG nomination in lead and also the razzie for Jack Nicholson in Hoffa. LOL!

It also actually has happened on two occasions for the same film. Amy Irving in Yentl and James Coco for Only when I Laugh were both nominated for Oscars and Razzies for the same performances. As far as I can remember neither “won” either award.
