How do this year's Oscar contending performances stack up to last year?

So for example, does Allison Janney give a more Oscar worthy performance than Viola Davis?

On Janney and Davis, that was purely for comparison’s sake, not to be punitive to Davis. Davis is frankly something else compared to Janney, and I loved Janney in her film.
On Affleck and Oldman and Chalamet, that’s fair enough. I’d probably tie Affleck and the latter tbh, they are both great in their own way.

Last year, at least in my opinion, the best category was Supporting Actress and the worst was Supporting Actor (I saw all performances except Isabelle Huppert). This year, Best Actress seems to be the best although I have barely seen any performances. I don’t know which category is the weakest… maybe Supporting Actress?
