Why would she get nominated if her peers disliked her performance or did not find worth in it?

I’m not saying they actively disliked her performance (nor am I saying that no one found worth for her performance) but its not implausible for one to argue that due to the weak field, Close’s name and industry goodwill helped her get in for this performance.

I was more disagreeing with the notion that all of those who nominated Close found her performance to be particularly outstanding. Not everyone who gets nominated for an Oscar gets nominated (or even wins) because their peers think they necessarily gave the best performance.

Albert Nobbs was good. The Wife & Hillbilly Elegy were not. But I don’t begrudge Glenn’s nominations. She’s a legend and deserves to eventually win.

I think she should have won for The World According to Garp and Dangerous Liaisons already personally. But then I wouldn’t have nominated her for some of the other stuff she got nominated for

There is no evidence that voting bodies found worth in Close’s performance (especially when she was snubbed by two). Just like there is admittedly little evidence to back up what I’ve said about why she got nominated this year (apart from the fact that we’ve seen a nomination like this before happen at SAG). There’s no need to condemn someone from having a different opinion to yourself.

BAFTA snubbed Colman so their denial of Close this season is a meaningless aside. And if you’re referring to that Aussie awards body — who cares?

Between Albert Nobbs and Hillbilly Elegy, Close has only starred in eleven films (I am excluding uncredited cameos).

    (…)

What both Albert Nobbs and The Wife share in common is that they were passion projects of Close and she delivered acclaimed performances in both in spite of them having fairly average (or in Albert Nobbs‘ case mixed) reviews.

Hillbilly Elegy is a different case where a film attracts attention for its pedigree, is a big commercial and critical flop but then one performance from the film attracts some attention because of the person who gives it and actors extend their sympathies to that performer and throw a “thank you” nod at SAG to them. An example of this is Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy. The only reason Close got the Oscar nomination was because of the weak field.

Ok, there’s some odd revisionism in here.

    A) «Only» 11 films, for a +60 y.o. actress, is a good amount of work.

    B) The Wife had not «average» reviews. It has positive reviews (86% on RT and 77 on MT).

    C) Hillbilly Elegy has been panned by critics but I could never ever tell it is a commercial failure.

    D) Academy had the chance to throw a nod to a legend like Burstyn, to Fishback in a loved film, to Zengel in another appreciated movie, to Globe winner Jodie Foster. Yet they decided to go with Close. And not for the field to be weak, but because they did appreciate her performance. Deal with it. Will she win? Who knows. Yet she’s there.

One last thing. Stop saying you do like Close. You simply don’t and there’s nothing wrong (unless you do insult her for no reasons). Just don’t pretend to be wise or else about her. You do just spread, let’s say… wrong? messages. You’d be more honest by telling you dislike her. Really.

Glenn Close should have won the Oscar for both Dangerous Liaisons and Fatal Attraction and her performances in The World According to Garp and Albert Nobbs were better than the eventual winning performances in those years. I would have nominated her personally for 101 Dalmatians (seriously!) and even though I preferred Olivia Colman’s performance in The Favourite, I still think Close would have been a worthy winner for The Wife. I would have awarded her for each season of Damages. I also find her to be a more capable actress than Ellen Burstyn, Olivia Colman, Jodie Foster and Amanda Seyfried.

But sure! Go ahead! Because I disagree with a hypothesis and am fatigued by certain users going around claiming she’s some lock to sweep for Hillbilly Elegy (and am fed up of users claiming those who disagree with them are a part of some conspiracy), I am somehow a rampant hater lol.

Y’all will do anything to try and discredit Glenn Close, and for what? Seriously, enough of this nonsense already.

Exactly. Some people were too blind and ignorant to not include Glenn in their TOP 10 or even TOP 15 predictions (I can fathom not including her in your hopedictions but predictions???) when times have proved again and again that the actors’ branch massively respect her. Now they are whining too? Sorry but Glenn severely won the battles against critics and her haters for overcoming the odds being nominated. Whatever the naysayers are saying now, it won’t change anything

Industry clearly responded to Albert Nobbs as Janet McTeer was also nominated everywhere. Also Glenn’s performance was incredible and transformative, and the film was decent too.

Glenn was simply brilliant in The Wife, and the raves were there. She was win-competitive, and was obviously the runner up to Colman.

I can’t understand why she got nominated for trash like Hillbilly Elegy, so that’s the only puzzling one for me.

Yay finally someone agrees that Glenn was excellent in The Wife!

I also think that what really helped Close for both Albert Nobbs and The Wife was the fact that both projects were passion pieces of hers. Actors tend to eat up “the art is personal” type of narrative and it’s why I anticipate that she’ll get nominated and perhaps even win for Sunset Boulevard (a role that is probably one of Close’s most iconic).

I just saw the trailer for the movie with Mila Kunis and WHEW! Jail for everyone involved. The internet lost their minds with Hillbilly Elegy, but at least that had a budget. Imagine them wasting a nomination (she would never win for that) for this straight-to-DVD (memba those?) madness. It also goes to show that Glenn is game for anything.

Close’s film is awful but so was Bombshell (MUCH WORSE) and Richard JewellTheron I understand why she was nominated but Robbie had no business being there and SAG going all out for Bombshell was quite literally atrocious. No one watched Bate’s movie but she had the fortune to being in a Clintwood film to form a comeback narrative. It’s not exclusive to Close. Sometimes actors get nominations because of their veteran status or namecheck. Close undergone the deglam transformation AMPAS liked so thats another factor that got her a nomination. The Wife  and Albert Nobbs were underwhelming forgettable films and Close delivers wonderful performance in them still but I admire Close’s determination to get the project started and continue throughout years of the film being developed. Her nominations for those films were admirable if anything in an industry where older women struggle to find roles.

The absolute reach. It’s the director of Albert Nobbs, with whom Glenn already worked twice before. So, it’s no surprise as to why she said yes. Also, can yall stop pretend there’s always Oscar worthy projects for women her age? Specially when Hollywood seems to think only Meryl is alive to play those roles.

The evidence is with Close’s nominations. She could have been so easily snubbed. This shows both voters’ acknowledgement and confidence with the performance itself. No “tantrum” was being thrown. I was responding to your snide, backhanded accusations against Close.

Agree. That’s the problem with this thread. It’s a backhanded attack at her and her multiple nominations. If it was really about validating the actress, it would have been phrased differently.

Why not question why Emma Stone’s has had three nominations in 6 years or Davis 4 or God forbid, Lawrence 4? And please don’t tell me they all deserved those nominations because they are great acting thespians. Legends! Ridiculous thread.
