The point of contention is that it’s incredibly ageist bullshit that for some reason (maybe b/c Close is competitive to win the Oscar and it leaves the haters so pressed), the goalposts are constantly changing for Close to win, while other perennial nominees aren’t targeted. She has to be in “Citizen Kane” apparently to win an Oscar when no one else is held to that same standard. Asking why someone is continually being nominated reeks of “why are these undeserved nods happening in the first place?” No one would dare ask this of Viola Davis, for example. It’s incredibly disingenuous and facetious, and people have rightfully called out that shit for exactly what it was.

Totally agree – somehow Close (and ok, even Streep since it took her forever to win her 3rd Oscar) are held to higher, different standards when judging their acting. It’s great cos it means they are clearly rarefied thespians who are highly regarded for their craft and what they bring to their roles, but a little unfair when they do not win.

The reason is because the general public want her to win an Oscar badly. That’s why she’s getting all these nominations that aren’t translating to wins. If Meryl Streep had done these movies, no one would have wished for her to get nominated. That’s how biased folks are because she did nothing nomination worthy in Nobbs and Wife. Streep wouldn’t even have been nominated for Hillbilly

Michelle Pfieffer was someone who coasted off her looks-she’s not a very good actress, maybe it’s the quality of the roles I’ve seen her in but I’ve never been a fan of her with the exception of Batman Returns. I get the feeling that nobody really likes Bening or the roles she plays.

Maybe Glenn Close keeps on getting nominated for Oscars but never winning because she is very well respected but not very well liked.

The ‘overdue factor’ is diminishing every year with the rafts of new member intakes. Most of the new members won’t know and won’t care about the number of times Close has been nominated without winning. Frankly – why should they?

Hillbilly Elegy has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 26%. Close is also up for a Razzie – for the same role!

Close stans and fans should face it: Glenn’s going zero out of eight!

She gets nominated because Academy keeps voting for her. AMPAS couldn’t care less that general public wants Glenn to win an Oscar. The revisionism of some goes beyond logic and reaches outlandish heights.

Lmao what’s with these overcomplicated reasons? Like Glenn is only respected but not liked???? You should know that the acting branch votes for the nominees, and the whole Academy, with every branch including the sound or short films branches vote for the winners. It’s clear she’s very beloved by her peers to get nominated, but none of her 3 latest nominations came from strong enough films to get supports from all branches. And, as strong and passionate as Olivia was during that awards season, I’m sure as hell Glenn would have won if only the acting branch had voted for the acting winners.

Glenn would have definitely won in 2018 if only the acting branch voted- I agree.

I have another questions. Lots of people claim Glenn is disliked in the industry, but I’ve never seen anything to support this other than the controversy with the reshooting of Fatal Attraction. And I can’t imagine that in itself would ruin her reputation. So where’s the evidence she is unpopular?

Close should have got some recognition for 1994’s The Paper. A fun little movie that’s somehow not that appreciated around here.

Even if she loses again, it’s incredible: Glenn Close has 8 Oscar noms.

In some ways, it’s more of a victory to be an 8-time nominee who never won than a 1-time nominee who did win.

I agree. Gwenyth Paltrow won an Oscar for no reason which Close rightfully criticized and has not appeared at the Oscars ever since. Close has a decades spanning career of awards recognition and excellent performances. Close is tied with Geraldine Page for the 4th nominated actress in the history of the Academy.

    Michelle Williams Oscar campaign manager.

101 Dalmatians feels like it would’ve been a Supporting Actress nomination for Glenn if released today.
