I know, it’s still early to speculate, without seeing critical consensus or box office. But since it’s directed by “Harry Potter” veteran David Yates and written by author J.K. Rowling, let’s assume for a moment that its acclaim and box office are roughly equivalent to late-era “Potter” — which would be pretty great if it hits that level. How many Oscar nominations might it get?
No “Harry Potter” film got more than three nominations, and always in craft categories, but for some reason I could see this improving on that slightly. Visual Effects feels like a pretty safe bet, Production Design is a strong possibility just from the evidence of the trailer. The period setting could help put it in Costume Design as well. And then it could still show up in Sound, Score, Cinematography. I don’t think it will sweep those fields, but I think four or five total is a distinct possibility.
What do you guys think? How many nominations, and in which categories? And is there a chance for nominations outside of techs, crafts, and music?

Production Design (very good)

Costume Design (good)
Visual Effects (good if reviews are good)November 10, 2016 at 10:46 am #1201948806I’d go with 4 maximum – Visual Effects, Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hairstyling.
The Harry Potter franchise never won an Oscar, and their noms tallies weren’t the highest. No chance outside of tech and craft regardless of critical response.

PS: In what category does this movie submit for Screenplay? Original or Adapted?

Adapted. Fantastic Beasts is a book by JK Rowling.
But the screenplay itself wasn’t adapted from it. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is just a fictional textbook that they used at Hogwarts and Rowling decided to write and publish it for charity.
So this movie would be in the Original Screenplay category. Which I think it’s not gonna get in just because of Rowling’s name recognition.
