One of the best song categoriesFebruary 19, 2017 at 10:48 pm #1202016278
It will lose:
Best Sound Editing
Best Song (1 of them)
Best Original Screenplay
Best Costume Design
Best Actress/Best Production Design/Sound Mixing (I’m predicting an upset in one of these)February 20, 2017 at 12:00 am #1202016321
I have it winning both Production Design and Costume Design. Jackie just does not strike me as a winner in costume design and a win for Arrival in production design would be a real shocker.February 20, 2017 at 3:45 am #1202016401

Well apparently the BAFTA and Critics Choice Award and the Costume Design Guild has agreed with the Oscars ever since, and Jackie won Critics and BAFTA against La La Land, even when Jackies peak fell after Critics Choice. Personal opinion, La La Land clothes straight up look like clothes you can get at Forever21, or some big department store.February 20, 2017 at 7:31 am #1202016509
Wasn’t there a thread like this already?
Anyway, I’m thinking 7. Maximum is 9.February 20, 2017 at 9:17 am #1202016585

What are the two you’re thinking it might or might not get. I’m thinking 7-9 too, but my issue is that there are some tech categories I think it’ll lose, but I don’t think there’s a sole second pick in those categoriesFebruary 20, 2017 at 12:49 pm #1202016709
I know most people are predicting it to win Editing but I have a feeling Arrival could win there. It did win the Eddie (though wasn’t competing against LLL) and the editing is really essential to the storytelling. But really, LLL will be “upset” in at least one category I’m sure, and Editing is my guess.February 20, 2017 at 5:18 pm #1202016958
i think 6 winsFebruary 20, 2017 at 6:04 pm #1202016978

Well, I dislike the film immensely, and I still don’t see any way it earns less than 8 at the very minimum:
Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography, Production Design, Editing, Sound Mixing, Score.
As for the other 5:
SONG: I hate invoking the whole “vote split” argument since it’s so often grossly misused, but this is a perfect example of how it might actually happen: (Step 1) Two equal contenders divide the LA LA fans evenly. But a vote split can’t work unless there is one single alternative that significantly eclipses the other possibilities. In this case, (Step 2) we have it with EGOT contender Miranda. Still a long shot, though.
COSTUME DESIGN: LA LA’s biggest advantage is that there isn’t a major Masterpiece Theatre period production that would be an obvious place to absorb the Eye Candy vote. In this case, LA LA is the eye candy (even if the candy is Skittles). JACKIE is memorable more for being iconic (from a historical perspective) than for being a creative stand-out. Don’t get me wrong, that would still get my vote, but it’s still an uphill battle.
SOUND EDITING: SLUMDOG’s loss in this category despite its sweep (including the Mixing counterpart) is the biggest encouragement here. HACKSAW’s existence on the ballot is another, since “pew pew pew” shooting noises do so well here and we’ve seen the film has support across the acting/directing/craft factions.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: My biggest hope is that even some of the most ardent LA LA fans saw the record-tying 14 nominations and thought “it’s good but not *that* good”. Which means any reasonable excuse to give it to someone else deserving will be jumped upon. This mean’s MANCHESTER here, since few people are going to list “the dialogue” as their favorite part of LLL.
ACTOR: Not a chance. Only Garfield has worse odds.
So in the final tally, I’ll say 10. Hate that it could be that high, but seems pretty likely at this point (and could go as high as 12, *shudder*).February 23, 2017 at 2:33 pm #1202019957
I think 9.
