Is it worth it? I know they used to say an Oscar ads some huge amount to the box office take…….but now with streaming do they get their money back?
What about TV? Does an award increase viewership that much still?

Get Out had a 4.5 million budget which is not bad for a horror film from a first time director, the film exceeded any expectations and grossed over 250 million so the 7 million spent on the campaign were pretty justifiable. Movies with high BP potential from big studios also have a bigger campaign budget, presumed frontrunners like The Social Network (225 million at the box office), Argo (230 million), Gravity (720 million), A Star Is Born (430 million), Roma (Netflix’s first oscar contender) – just to name a few – all had campaign budgets ranging between 20 – 30 million, but your average movie campaign would most likely range between 3 – 6 million.
Now the question “is it worth it?” is simply answered by: yes. Like I pointed before most movies with very expensive campaigns are box office hits so the studio is already profiting from the film – if we take ASIB as an example in the film’s 17th week of release, following its eight Oscar nominations, it was added back to an additional 777 theaters (for a total of 1,192) and made $1.3 million, an increase of 107% from the previous weekend. The weekend following its Best Original Song win at the Oscars, the film was added to 490 theaters (for a total of 1,235) and made $1.9 million, a 209% increase from the previous weekend – Also the movie’s market value becomes much higher for it’s later life like streaming services buying it’s rights, digital download, home media/DVD, possible soundtrack sales, etc. But most importantly winning an Academy award gives industry people longevity and puts weight and respect on people’s names and that keeps the market going, there will be a lot more funding for a project from a director that has previously won Best Director, actors will be validated as very talented so their public attraction will have a much better pull and therefore they will be more valuable to the studios, and that creates a chain system based on large amounts of money that flows from the public towards the movies for a long amount of time – succesful careers in show business last many years or decades possibly – and that chain starts with winning an Oscar, so yeah long explanation but I hope you understood my point.
