The definitive change in how the Academy works in the 2010s was changing the nature of the Best Picture nomination counts. From 1944 to 2008, the Oscars had a straightforward five nominees for each year in the first-past-the-post system. 2008 (as you can see in my forum game for the 81st Oscars) had a lot of great films that just met the cut, arguably due to genre bias. So it changed to a system of preferential voting of 10 nominees.

This meant films like Up, Toy Story 3, and District 9 could be nominated. However, then things changed.

Now it’s 5-10 nominees, based on meeting a percentage in the first round as opposed to the multi-round nature of the 09-10 system. There’s a lot of nuances explained in the linked articles.

Anyway, there is a question as to which of these systems works best. I’ll summarise the pros and cons of each as neutrally as possible, and then ask you to make your judgement

    5 picture system 1944-2008

Pros: Small, tight list with fewer films that “don’t deserve”, being nominated feels like a bigger deal, a number that is equal to director/performance

Cons: Historically excludes genre fare or foreign films, first-past-the-post does not account for consensus as well as preferential

    10 picture system 2009-2010

Pros: A consistent number, longer redistribution of votes allows for more accurate consensus, fewer ballots discarded, Preferential voting

Cons: Some films that get in will lack the immediate level of support that the 5-10 system requires, deflates the significance of a best picture nomination

    5-10 picture system 2011-

Pros: The first place emphasis means that enthusiasm by voters is key, fewer excess nominations, Preferential voting

Cons: Still has more excess nominations than 5 picture, discards large amounts of ballots, no consistent number standard year-to-year, less of an aggregate consensus in the process, Extremely Loud and Terribly Close got in under this system

For fun, I added some systems that have never been used such as 5 Picture preferential voting, or 10 Picture First Past The Post.

My current take is that I like having more than 5 nominations, but the current system annoys me. The nomination number changing each year just isn’t something I’m a fan of. Yeah, the 2009 system would mean a couple more bad nominees each year potentially, but the current system isn’t stopping those so I’d take consistency.

    None of the above.

My choice would have a first past the post voting system, BUT instead of nominating 5 films or 10 films, the nominations would go to all films that earned at least 5% of the vote.
