Whenever people say for example who do you think will win Best Supporting Actor? I feel like saying whoever wins the Globe.

If you look at the past like the 80s or so they differ a lot.

You’d think the Academy would resent having a handful of journalists basically decide their awards.

More awards now, less time everything, small centralised campaign targets, first one up so everyone copies.

I think these journalists have many friends inside the Academy, that’s the reason they could predict the winners at the Oscars especially the acting categories.

They aren’t that powerful. Aaron Taylor Johnson and awkwafina won globes and weren’t even nominated.

Yup, since they’re typically up first, other award bodies follow suit..

Because it’s a heavily-watched televised event with some element of “prestige.”

That’s a good point. In the eighties and nineties (not sure until when exactly) the Globes weren’t even on network TV. Just cable. Probably why they had less clout. In the eighties 6 of the 10 Oscar Supporting Actress winners didn’t win the Globe.

Plus I’d add what I saw Mike Nichols say once on Charlie Rose. Somewhere along the way voting became about being right. He said Academy members used to ask each other who was good? Who should I vote for. Then it morphed into who is going to win? People started voting like they were predicting and wanted bragging rights about getting all the categories right. That mentality probably led to all the prediction sites like Gold Derby.
