Let’s face it- getting elderly legends to present big awards sometimes just isn’t wise. Take for example when Elizabeth Taylor OPENED the envelope at the Golden Globes BEFORE going over the list of Best Picture-Drama nominees. She was about to just name Gladiator, and then there would have been (mild) ruckus. Luckily she was stopped. But still, Taylor (like Warren Beatty and def Faye) seemed a bit out of it and loopy.

If younger presenters (and I mean under 70) like say- Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, hell even Meryl Streep- had the same task with the Best Picture envelope, would they have realized Emma Stone’s name was in there and said “Something’s not right?” Or would the same thing have happened?

I’m not in any way knocking older people, but this seems to be a repeating occurrence. Like Taylor, Warren and Faye had not been really presenting for a while and both seemed like they were really out of it. Chalk it up to an objective opinion and go ahead and blame PWH, but the issue remains- perhaps the grand duo was just too senile to handle such a big task.

Morgan Freeman is the same age as Warren Beaty and presented best picture last year and read Spotlight correctly. So no, age isn’t the problem, it’s the people who presented the award didn’t bother thinking before reading out loud.

Morgan Freeman also had the right envelope.

Best Actress was right before Best Picture.

@prideful: DUDE I think you’re confused. I am saying that Warren SHOULD HAVE REALIZED that Emma Stone’s name was a MISTAKE and he had the wrong envelope. And perhaps a younger or more alert presenter would have realized this and spoke up. Did you read my post at all??

I did read your question and you are making a statement that can’t ever be proven correct or incorrect. And you seemed confused when I brought up best actress was before best picture and thought it had nothing to do with your question. This is something anyone at any age could’ve messed up on so suggesting a younger person wouldn’t have fucked up on it is pointless. And 1 producer for a whole movie would look ridiculous  and he should know that if he’s been in the industry for 50+ years and nominated 4x for best Picture as a producer.

If A Younger Presenter Had Announced Best Pic, Would the Same Mistake Happen?

You should not have gone there.  Having said that, I would think that most people, regardless of age, would have been more vocal about asking if they had the wrong card than Warren Beatty, who put too much value on keeping the show professional.  You could say that his respect for the institution is a byproduct of his age.  I mean, remember when the teleprompter was not working for Jimmy Fallon and instead of telling himself that the show must go on, he told everyone that the teleprompter was broken, thus releasing himself from potential blame?

Nope, they would say that there has been a mistake either before they opened it (as it says ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ on the front of the envelope) or when they opened it and it bloody said ‘Emma Stone’, cause I don’t know any movies this year titled ‘Emma Stone’. Stupid mistake in general.

@prideful: clearly you didn’t, as I stated in my post that Beatty should have stated that Emma Stone’s name was in there and that it was the best actress award. He didn’t and my question is would a less senile
And aged star have made that error.

This is ridiculous. Why would you assume you have to check the envelope?

Warren Beatty did stop and read it. He did read Emma Stone and tried looking for another card, the right card. Stuffing the wrong card in what might have been the right envelope is just as likely. Because Faye Dunaway was anxious, wouldn’t you be during awkward silence in front of millions of people, she said “come on”. Warren was trying to show her the ERROR in the card and she out of nerves saw La La Land at a glance. Because the show as always was running long, she quickly announced La La Land. Especially when most everyone, including most everyone on this site!, thought La La would win.

This is 100% PwC’s fault. As I said in another thread, the dude handling the envelope’s was too busy taking selfies with Emma Stone to pay attention to what he was doing.

In the future, maybe they should put the category in bigger font on BOTH sides of the envelope. I don’t want to see Justin Bieber giving out Best Picture. I prefer an Oscar legend myself.

Lastly, this is an important read:

Warren seems classy, his mistake was he didn’t want to call out the obvious blunder on live tv. He knew the envelope was wrong, he knew it wasn’t right. He looked for the right card, he looked around to backstage and production. What he didn’t want to do was call them out on live tv to billions and say “this is the wrong envelope it says Emma Stone.”

That was his only mistake but the same envelope would have still been given wrong.

Perhaps had someone younger and more blunt was doing the presentation then they wouldn’t have had the problem calling the Academy out. However, old school Warren seem to not want to put the show on blast like that to say they messed up.

Yeah. The mistake happened because the dude with the envelopes was tweeting about Emma Stone. Wouldn’t have mattered who was out there.
