A much-maligned and controversial category for its biases and exclusions, Best Animated Feature nonetheless is a necessity to acknowledge the great work animated films can offer to cinema as a medium. However, it is relatively new, having only started in 2001. Animated movies have been around way longer than that.

From 1940 onwards, at least one animated feature film came out each year. While some animated films, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, came out before this point, I’ll pick 1940 just so we don’t have skipped years.

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
Best International Film: Weathering With You, Parasite

Probably Disney would dominate until the dark age.

I'm not perfect, but I keep trying.

1940: Tough call, but I’ll go for Pinocchio since that is closer to a conventional movie than Fantasia.

1941: Dumbo. That would’ve been on the cover of Time if not for Pearl Harbour. Big box office hit.

    1942: Bambi

1943: Victory Through Air Power. No other animated film came out this year, so propaganda film oscar it is.

1944: The Three Caballeros. I didn’t say the 1940’s were great for animated films, just that they had at least one each year

1945: The Lost Letter? A soviet winner at this point might be dicey, but there’s not a Disney or a US propaganda film so.

1946: Make Mine Music. Now, Song of the South was this year. As uncomfortable as this might be to acknowledge now, it was a big hit then. It would have won if this category existed… but I think it has too much of a percentage of live action.

    1947: Fun and Fancy Free

    1948: Melody Time

1949: The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

The 1940s didn’t have much competition. Just a lot of Disney winners. So nothing’s changed

    1950: Cinderella

    1951: Alice in Wonderland

1952: The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep Miyazaki gave this a shoutout, so it must be good

    1953: Peter Pan

1954: Animal Farm: The CIA funded this so they’d want an Oscar for it

    1955: Lady and the Tramp

1956: The Twelve Months but also Hollywood in this era would’ve probably rather removed this category for a year than award a Soviet Union film tbh

1957: The Snow Queen see The Twelve Months

1958: The Tale of the White Serpent first anime win?

    1959: Sleeping Beauty

1950s, another dull decade for animation.

    1960s time! groovy

1960: Alakazam the Great I guess

1961: One Hundred and One Dalmatians

1962: Gay Purr-ee because a film with that title and Judy Garland is surely a good movie

1963: The Sword in the Stone

1964: Mary Poppins could scam into this category even though it’s mostly live action

1965: ??? The Man From Button Willow???

    1966: Jungle Emperor Leo

    1967: The Jungle Book

    1968: Yellow Submarine

1969: A Boy Named Charlie Brown

Maybe 1960s weren’t great for animation. Shoutout to skinny legend Yellow Submarine tho

1970s! THIS is where things heat up. Slowly. but hot. Hot hot.

1970: The Aristocats because that was the first Disney film post-Walt death.

    1971: Bedknobs and Broomsticks

1972: Fritz The Cat. This would be an X-rated winner, very starkly contrasting against the very tame previous winners.

1973: Robin Hood. Wow this was a great decade for sexy furries

1974: Adventures of Sinbad the Sailor? Looks distinctive at least

1975: really not sure what would get it this year. I’ll go back to this

    1976: see 1975

    1977: The Rescuers

1978: Watership Down though The Lord of the Rings would be a contender

1979: Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro Watched this movie recently and it holds up as an action movie

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse

The Prince of Egypt would have won for 1998. That movie won Original Song for that year too.

This is outside the boundaries but
    Snow White 1937

    Fantasia 1940

Animated films get an unfair rap. It’s art in a different form .

    Ps: The Smurfs?

1986:No way An American Tail doesn’t win this in a walk. This is that run where Don Bluth was beating the snot out of Disney, the music was INSANELY popular and has the better story.

I’m not so sure about Watership Down. That is a violent movie and I recall it receiving some critism from parents.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS would’ve locked up 1993, no contest. Ditto JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH over B&B.

ROGER RABBIT had way too many live-action segments, so it goes to Jan Svankmajer’s ALICE, which did have a nation-wide release.
