December 29, 2020 at 9:25 am #1203951455Which of the shortlisted contenders do you think would have filled the two remaining slots? I’ll do 2010-18:
2010
Alice in Wonderland
The Fighter2011
The Artist
Hugo2012
Lincoln
Men in Black 32013
American Hustle
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (lol)2014
Maleficent
The Theory of Everything2015
Black Mass
Mr. Holmes2016
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
(Apparently Deadpool wasn’t well-received at the bakeoff but I can’t imagine either of the other two shortlisted films being nominated.)2017
Bright
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 22018
Black Panther
Stan and Ollie
(I loved the makeup in Suspiria but I heard it was indifferently received at the bakeoff, which saddens me.)Finally, which of the two 2019 nominees would have missed had the makeup branch not expanded their lineup to a full five? Perhaps counterintuitively I think Joker and Judy would’ve been the casualties, as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil did very well at the bakeoff while the makeup team of 1917 had to account for consistency and create subtle changes in pallor throughout long takes. The facepaint on Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker was impressive but comparatively simple, while Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland was not a total transformation, nor was it meant to be.

ReplyCopy URLFYC:
Riz Ahmed- Best Actor for Sound Of Metal
Daniel Kaluuya - Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah
Amanda Seyfried - Best Supporting Actress for MankDecember 29, 2020 at 11:33 am #12039516792018
Black Panther
Stan and Ollie
(I loved the makeup in Suspiria but I heard it was indifferently received at the bakeoff, which saddens me.)Oh really? Damn. I found it incredible and always thought of it as the fifth spot behind Black Panther. That dislocated jaw is one of the sickest make-up effects I have ever seen.

Lead Actor: Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round)
Supporting Actress: Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm)
Supporting Actor: Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)
