The title is pretty self-explanatory. I’ve given my thoughts on what I thought was 2nd place, and I think it’s worth considering that if we’re taking Parasite out of this equation in this hypothetical situation, that also leaves open Director, Original Screenplay and International Feature Film.
ReplyFebruary 29, 2020 at 5:07 pm #1203365336Director would have gone to Sam Mendes, but both picture and original screenplay to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, because that’s the next in line with the most support from both writers and actors. 1917 was just too much a substance-less of a movie to earn best picture honors.
International film would have gone to Pain and Glory.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 29, 2020 at 8:57 pm #1203365453I think The Irishman would have benefit this.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 29, 2020 at 9:17 pm #1203365455I think 1917 would’ve taken Picture and Director, Marriage Story would’ve taken screenplay, and Pain and Glory would’ve taken International Film.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 29, 2020 at 9:32 pm #1203365457I think Jojo would have pulled off the shocking upset. It was the other film bubbling under the surface as 1917 was fading. Mendes would have won director tho.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 29, 2020 at 11:38 pm #1203365499Here’s the thing: in this theory in which Parasite does not exist, Once Upon a Time easily takes SAG Ensemble which Parasite had before going on to win Best Picture. No other film could take home SAG Ensemble if it wasn’t going to be Parasite. Also, given that it won the Golden Globe Screenplay and Critics’ Choice for Original Screenplay, it would likely also win Original Screenplay at the Oscars too. Also Once Upon a Time was nominated pretty much everywhere it needed to be the whole season, unlike Jojo Rabbit.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 1, 2020 at 5:29 am #1203365652Probably 1917 for Picture even though it seemed to be fading. Maybe Hollywood.
Mendes for Director. Baumbach for Screenplay. Pain and Glory for International.

Director : Mendes, he won every single precursor
Screenplay : Hollywood. It did well with the precursors and critics. Marriage Story never really happened in the big 5
SAG Ensemble : Hollywood. But they sometimes have random winners like Hidden Figures so anything could have happened

Best Supporting Actor - Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman
Best Picture - Nomadland
Best Director - Chloé Zhao
SAG Ensemble - Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Best Cinematography - NomadlandMarch 1, 2020 at 7:41 am #1203365751I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would’ve benefitted the most in a non Parasite existing world…..
ReplyCopy URLMarch 1, 2020 at 7:48 am #1203365757It probably would’ve been Jojo and I’m happy that didn’t happen. I like Taika Waititi and Jojo is fine, but he is capable of so much more.

I wouldn’t want such a controversial BP winner to follow you around your whole career.March 1, 2020 at 8:52 am #1203365818“1917” would have won BP & BD. Tarantino was next in line for Original Screenplay. “Pain & Glory” in International Film. Whatever replaces “Parasite” in all these categories needs to be considered too, even if its winning chances are negligible.

Disagree with an easy win. The Irishman won ensemble at CC. Once underperformed all season long. I don’t see any urge to reward it. I guess Tarantino would have gotten screenplay by default.

March 1, 2020 at 1:06 pm #1203366034I do feel like HOLLYWOOD would’ve ended up benefitting the most from this and it would’ve won Screenplay and Picture.
I do think Mendes would’ve pulled off Director.
The massive nomination count for JOKER is crazy but I don’t think it was ever going to win anything beyond the two it actually did.
JOJO RABBIT is another interesting case because if SPOTLIGHT could win with just a Screenplay win, maybe JOJO could’ve too…and chances are Waititi would’ve slipped into Director without Bong there. I just feel like it was probably too divisive in a way that HOLLYWOOD wasn’t.

Hollywood would’ve just needed to pray that one of its fellow nominees wasn’t the epitome of ensemble, which I feel was what helped Parasite.
