Merging then would be a terrible idea.
About non-binary actors, I couldn’t even name five popular ones. I don’t really care where they would fit.

Well that’s because it’s not considered popular to be non-binary in the world, thus non-binary people are given less opportunities.

And also because non-binary people make up 0.003% of the population.

It’s not going to happen now because the industry is still too male-dominated especially behind the scenes. If it were to happen, you’d have to find a way to get an equal number of male and female nominees, because gender-neutral categories don’t always guarantee that. The Daytime Emmys just merged their Younger Actor/Actress categories into a single gender-neutral one, and their nominees this year all ended up being female. If gender-neutral acting categories were to happen at the Oscars, and if the reverse happened where all or most of the nominees were male, there’d absolutely be backlash for not having enough female nominees. As antiquated as gendered categories may sound, it ironically always presents an equal split of gender with 10 male and 10 female nominees, and 2 male and 2 female winners every year.

Although I have heard the Academy has let non-binary actors decide for themselves what category they’d like to be eligible for, similar to how the Emmys let Asia Kate Dillon submit themselves for the Supporting Actor In A Drama Series category.

I think it would be too much drama.

There would be complaints about having too many women or men in a category. Even if there has to be a even number of both sexes, there would be complaints about the same sex winning back to back. It is simply too much.

If there are all or mostly female nominees and winners, I foresee a lot of complaints and grumbling from the men claiming they’re trying to be politically correct. If there are all or mostly male nominees and winners, I can see complaints from the women about sexism. If there are quotas of 5 men and 5 women in the non-gender specific categories, to ensure equal representation, then what’s the point of not keeping the existing categories separating men and  women? It’s too much of a headache, on top of existing diversity issues in the industry, and there’s no way to make it workable.

The irony is that by enforcing the separation of the acting categories by gender, you’re actually ensuring that women will always be represented and be guaranteed two winners. Also, the acting winners are, fairly or unfairly, the most famous and the most eagerly anticipated part of the Oscars. Why do you think almost everyone who presents the awards are all actors, even in the technical categories? Do they really want to reduce the number of acting awards from four to two?

I would be more for merging the categories into general Female and Male performances. I’m not sure why supporting performances necessarily need their own categories, but if a stellar one stands out as worthy of recognition then it should be able to make a broader gendered category. As for this gender split, as opposed to other categories, it makes sense to me that performance, as an artistic representation of the human experience, merits the distinction between recognizing female and male actors — social equality aside (we can embrace that we’re all different while wanting to abolish patriarchal structures!).

Tge fact that frauded leads almost always win when in supporting categories just goes to show why the lead and supporting categories should not be merged. Supporting performances will pretty much never be nominated under that system.

If they get fraud lead performances to pick up an extra acting win, doesn’t that render the distinction moot anyways?

As I said, it would cause almost all supporting performances to never be nominated, so yes, there would be a notable distinction.

Do you think Mahershala Ali would’ve got in for Green Book though?

If Ali went lead, he definitely would’ve made the cut. No offense to Willem Dafoe, but it was extremely obvious that he was last place, and if Ali went into the right category, he would’ve easily been nominated alongside Viggo.

In keeping with this thread, here’s a letter on Variety from Asia Kate Dillon, who is non-binary, where they argued to eliminate gender-specific acting categories from the SAG Awards.
