This is assuming that if both Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones were both successfully submitted as Lead in Chicago, then Nicole Kidman would go down to Supporting for The Hours (and of course win). Would Zellweger and Zeta-Jones split the vote? And who would be the beneficiary of that? Or would one or the other win?

…why would Kidman go down to Supporting if CZJ were to go Lead..?

They were both nominated in lead at the Globes and Zellweger won.

I really feel like Nicole Kidman was only ever campaigned in Lead because she’s Nicole Kidman and she’s playing Virginia Woolf. I get why they campaigned Julianne in Supporting for the Hours since they may not have wanted to interrupt her campaign for Far From Heaven.

I think he means regardless of that a scenario where both Chicago ladies are nominated in Lead, and Kidman had gone supporting.

My answer is probably Moore. She won Critics Choice that year over any of them, and had the double nomination narrative. It was her 4th nomination. I’m confident she’d take it. And ofc Kidman would have taken Supporting easily even with potentially Moore also nominated in Supporting for The Hours. There’s no way Streep would have won her 3rd in Supporting, and if Moore was winning Lead, all the focus on her would be in Lead, not Supporting, allowing for Kidman to potentially sweep.

    Agreed.

I feel like either Catherine would still win as Lead, or she and Renee would split enough votes to allow Julianne Moore to pull off a surprise. I think in the latter scenario, The Pianist ends up pulling off an upset for Best Picture.
