I’m not the only one who has been involved with the idea … what if after some of the most undeserving Meryl-nominations of the past few years, this is the year when Meryl Streep is finally out of the race?
Or is it delusional to think that it can happen?
I’d say Chastain, Dench and Williams can challenge her for sure. My bet is currently on Chastain.
ReplyJanuary 16, 2018 at 5:51 am #1202468364Every year that she is running we have this post in here. It didn’t happen for August and Into The Woods (???) and definitely it won’t happen for The Post. I repeat, Streep was nominated for playing a witch in a Disney musical that bombed. She will not miss a nomination by playing a real life person in a Spielberg directed movie.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2018 at 6:14 am #1202468369I don’t think Streep will be snubbed, but Chastain will probably replace her if she is. Molly’s Game as overperformed quite a bit this awards season.

January 16, 2018 at 7:01 am #1202468400Probably Chastain, maybe Dench. But I don’t see how Streep misses. Even though the movie is underperforming, you bet against her odds at your own risk.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2018 at 7:02 am #1202468401And then people see The Post and ask: Why isn’t she a bigger player? She is terrific in the film. She deserves to be in the top 5.

No. I think she’s just about right – her performance is middling especially at the beginning of the film. She makes something of it in the final acts.
I if Streep doesn’t get in, I would hope for Williams. But Chastain might be the more logical pick.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2018 at 7:27 am #1202468415Meryl can sit a year out. There is not much passion for the film and I think even industry people are a bit tired of nominating her. You know, there are a bunch of other deserving artists to be singled out as well. She has missed the SAG – even with screener issues, her name and the whole cast should have been name checked. It just didn’t happen.

Well to be fair the supporting actress category in that year wasn’t nearly as crowded as this year’s lead actress.

January 16, 2018 at 8:41 am #1202468502@Stegeo I think that missing BAFTA (somewhere that she should’ve been a lock for nomination) kills Dame Judi’s chances.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2018 at 9:23 am #1202468518Was The Post eligible for BAFTA?
I think if she gets left off it would be Williams or Dench who takes her place with McDormand, Ronan, Hawkins and Robie. (although I don’t know if Robie is a sure bet.)
