Probs Chastain. I actually have both she and Williams ahead of Streep at this point.

Chastain in definitely most likely to replace her, but I don’t see it happening. One day Meryl will stop getting automatic nominations but I’m not betting against her until she does.

Her Oscar legacy is all about auto-nods. People are very uncritical of her. No one discerns what merits as nomination worthy work from her sleepwalking and affected mugging.

Seems that the tides have turned since I made my similar topic after SAG. The field is currently beating Streep.

Was The Post eligible for BAFTA?

Yes, it comes out there before Lady Bird and I, Tonya.

There’s bigger chance my gurl wins two Oscars than Meryl ever being dropped by Academy. Do not ever bet against her. She’s always in. Even if 80% time she doesn’t deserve it.

Her perennial status is a blight on the American film community.

I remember how last year Streep wasn’t getting in, and when she wasn’t getting in for Into the Woods, and how she was on the borderline for August: Osage County. And none of those were even Best Picture contenders. I can’t in good conscience remove her from my predictions. My 6th is Chastain though.

I don’t think so… personally, I’d put in Jessica instead for Molly’s Game.

Meryl was good in The Post though and her nomination wouldn’t necessarily be undeserved. I think she has a lot of fans in the Academy that will translate into enough #1 votes to automatically get her in.

Feel bad for Jessica though, who really deserves a nomination this year.

Sidenote: I would REALLY like to see a shake-up in this category and see someone unexpected get nominated like Diane Kruger for In The Fade or Daniela Vega for A Fantastic Woman

I don’t really get the love for Jessica’s performance. She sleep walks through Molly’s Game, and she always feels like an outsider in her own film. It’s like she’s a narrator and things just happened to her, you never get the sense that she is living the events in question – and she’s so detached that I find her performance to be barely there in the film. She’s a firm 7th place at best, with regard to performance.

Sometimes there are surprise nominees, and I have a feeling about Vicky Krieps. I think Phantom Thread received some late surge attention from the voting members that it didn’t have for the earlier awards. If people are watching it because it’s the latest Paul Thomas Anderson film and to see DDL’s “final” performance, then they’ll be exposed to Krieps as well. I also think if people are thinking that Lesley Manville could sneak into Best Supporting Actress race, then I think Krieps will be along for that ride as well.

Streep missing out such a baity part seems unrealistic

Chastain has a stronger film than Dench, so her. But it isn’t happening. Neither her nor Dench are strong alternates. There is no other performance that has outside passion to get #1 votes (reminds me of 2015 when Jennifer Lawrence got that fifth slot), so Streep makes it in.

Krieps would’ve first landed at BAFTA before the Oscars. She’s not happening.
