Here are the options for who would have played Elisa Esposito if The Shape of Water was made in 1977 (40 years earlier). Feel free to vote for your pick.

I’m surprised Sissy Spacek isn’t a choice on here. She would have been absolutely perfect as Elisa, and it would have been a great follow-up to Carrie and an even greater stepping stone to her eventual Oscar win for Coal Miner’s Daughter.

I can see Talia Shire on this. Although Spacek is a great choice too.

Talia Shire would have won an Oscar for this role. Yes, I believe depending on how great this alternative universe 1977 “The Shape of Water” was, she would even have beat Diane Keaton.

Note to myself: Don’t ever feed the trolls. Don’t get involved in others drama. Don’t let myself be swayed by others predictions, trust my gut more often!

Note to all others: If you don’t happen to like me, ignore me. It is that simple.

Spacek probably wouldn’t have taken the role right after the success of Carrie.

I’ve read she got really type cast and turned down lots of horror and science fiction type stuff in the years in between Carrie and Coal Miner’s Daughter so she didn’t get typecast as a genre actress like Jamie Lee Curtis or Linda Blair.

Why are these three the choices? How about Shelley Duvall pre-Dr. Phil?

I guess since Sally Hawkins is British the person who started the thread chose other British actors.

Diana Rigg was kind of a sex symbol back then so she wouldn’t fit. Rita Tushingham I don’t think was ever much of a star. Certainly not in the US.
Shelley Duvall would have been good.

Lots of those 70s actresses could have done it like Karen Allen, Amy Irving, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright.

Sissy Spacek would have been great, to see her in this role especially if done right after Carrie.
