(Let me know if there was already a thread for this, I couldn’t find any)
I can say that this is by far the best movie released this year. The writing was great and the acting was excellent (Especially Jessie Buckley). I’m still trying to wrap my head around it and it’s been a couple of hours.
In terms of its awards prospects, I’d say its strongest bets are screenplay and production design maybe. Cinematography would also be possible depending on the competition.

Absolutely not.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2020 at 8:26 am #1203685953I don’t think so. She definitely gives a worthy performance but like The Lighthouse last year, it might be too weird for them.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2020 at 12:43 pm #1203686423Collette was great, but I don’t think she will get a significant awards buzz.

September 4, 2020 at 1:33 pm #1203686528Wow what a bizzare film.
Buckley was excellent and Collette was Oscar worthy as usual, but like Hereditary will probably get over looked
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2020 at 1:47 pm #1203686555I find it brave to do a bizarre and thought-provoking film like this. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen and I’m lost having just finished it.
Thewlis and Colette are terrifyingly hilarious, but Buckley is the standout. It will probably be too weird for the Academy to give it any acting nominations.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2020 at 3:00 pm #1203686640Academy is not touching that, especially actors. The only possible noms for this are Screenplay (I don’t think it’ll happen) and Cinematography (ASC winner is a DP for this, but still a big longshot).
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2020 at 3:38 pm #1203686675This was weirder than Synchedoche but unlike Synchedoche I actually liked this one.
Rooting for Buckley. Just to say that the source material of this film is weirder than the film itself…

September 4, 2020 at 4:32 pm #1203686759Jessie Buckley needs to blow up. Easily my favorite performance by an actor in film this year. The core four were amazing.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2020 at 5:17 pm #1203686863I think this is going to be that movie this year that is widely acclaimed but just too weird to get in with the Academy, which tends to prefer more straightforward fare.
I can see the same thing happening next year with the new Carax. Phenomenal, but goes nowhere awards-wise because Oscar voters just don’t get it.

Totally agree! The Academy doesn’t seem to go for Charlie Kaufman films post Eternal Sunshine.
