Kinda hated this? An hour too long and the direction served Aster wannabe to me. It just felt pretentious and banal, but that’s me. And yeah everything about the school sequences I hated as well (I mean those dancing and singing numbers, really?).

There are ways to present absurdity without trivializing thematic or character development – Ozu has achieved it, even Godard’s been successful on his best days, but Kaufman is too obsessed with ideas to achieve anything bold, anything that’s brave enough to take a real stance on the nature of art, whether one agrees with it or not. It’s more cold, clinical, and mocking of the viewer than anything that’s directly challenging, and I don’t find that subversive whatsoever. That said, there were a few interesting moments towards the beginning of the film. This is Buckley’s best performance yet, and she does a great job of elevating material that works against her – the way she looked directly into the camera during that poem gave me chills.
On that note, I hope this movie inspires people to delve some more into the work of Pauline Kael. Even if that scene was arguably where the movie fell apart, that recitation of her takedown of A Woman Under the Influence was one of the most cogent things the film produced, which is concerning. She’s probably the only reviewer who’s ever forced viewers into actively challenging and engaging with Cassavetes, so it was nice to recall that.

September 5, 2020 at 6:04 pm #1203688504They movie is gonna be divisive but you can’t denied Toni gave an Oscar worthy performance. I can’t believe how lukewarm the reception have been for Toni is on here she was a straight up tour de force. I might as well she this was better than her performance in hereditary.I really hope she the willem dafoe of this year where she gives an Oscar worth performance but she won’t get nominated. Jessie was pretty great too but I don’t know if she the best performance of the year on my list because of the rave reviews Vanessa Kirby has been getting at Venice rn. Gotta watch Kirby’s movie first to see if Jessie Buckley or Vanessa are my personal best of this year. Realistically I see this movie has no chance at the Oscar tbh. Maybe cinematography not sure about adapted screenplay though

i think it’s gonna be the former. All of Charlie’s movie are consider cult classics despite how divisive some of his movies can be. I can see film buffs defending this movie to death
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 5, 2020 at 7:35 pm #1203688599wow… this was atrocious. Toni Collette was awful, by far the worst performance i’ve seen from this year so far.

The CGI pig outacted her even. I can understand praising Jessie but Toni? alskkfjdfsj. Oscar-worthy not in the slightest.

And I’m thinking you’re just as pretentious as the film for stanning it. Anyways.

The film started out fine but completely loses its focus in the second half and turns into an incoherent, uninteresting and over the top mess. The screenplay gets way too talkative and is filled with meaningless conversation. The whole film has nothing to say and just ends up painting a bleak and desolate portrait of life and love, which has been done countless times before… imagine how tired we are.
