Under the ShadowNovember 22, 2016 at 11:21 am #1201955133I am thrilled that Isabelle Huppert is nominated; yet confused because I didn’t think her film would be eligible? I am so hoping she gets a long overdue Oscar nomination! She has given my two favorite performances by an actress this past year – I think Elle will be the one in contention. I have noticed there are no usual suspects for the older brit actress slot and am hoping this means they will recognize la Huppert! (:

JOHN CASSAVETES AWARD: Free In DeedNovember 22, 2016 at 5:24 pm #1201955301Very happy for Hell Or High Water, although it should have gotten nominated for Best Feature and Best Supporting Actor for Jeff Bridges. I’m glad to see some nominations for The Witch, but I also wish it had gotten nominated for Best Actress for Anya Taylor-Joy.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 23, 2016 at 12:14 am #1201955637Some very weird choices from the different committees.
I am still adamant as ever that the people comprising the committee each year should be made bigger. And include a handful of randomly selected Film Independent voters and not just “a committee comprising of filmmakers etc”. Members who vote for the winners should also have a say when it comes to the nominees.
I am a member, so I have my work cut out for me.
Very happy for Andrea Arnold, Pablo Larrain and Kelly Reichardt.
And of course Moonlight, which is carrying the torch this year for Independent films.

Presumably because of a tie in 5th place? With smaller voting bodies this tends to happen; there were 6 Best Actor nominees in 2013, for instance.
Very weird that Mahershali Ali, Naomie Harris and Michelle Williams didn’t get nominated. Even with the Robert Altman award for Moonlight.
EDIT: Actually after looking at that hefty Supporting Actor lineup it’s not such a shock that Ali didn’t get in.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 23, 2016 at 3:39 am #1201955807I’m assuming none of the “Moonlight” actors received individual nominations because the entire cast won the Robert Altman award(?).
Yes, that is why they weren’t nominated in their individual categories.
I have the feeling Lily Gladstone will win the Supporting Female category…

Check out AQUARIUS as soon as possible!
I already know you’re a big O.J. fan 🙂

I always have a problem with these awards in that many of the films never get released where i live, so I can only say who I am rooting for and not who deserves to win ):
I am rooting for:
Best Feature: Manchester by the Sea
Best Director: Andrea Arnold, American Honey
Best Lead Male Performance: Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Best Lead Female Performance: Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Best Supporting Male Performance: Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea
Best Supporting Female Performance: Molly Shannon, Other People
Best Screenplay: Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
Best First Feature: Other People
Best First Screenplay: Other People
Best Cinematography: American Honey
Best Editing: Jennifer Lame, Manchester by the Sea
Best Documentary: 13th
Best International Film: My Golden DaysI am predicting Moonlight will win most of the awards ): Because moonlight won the Robert Altman award it isn’t competing in any of the acting categories. If You love that film you will enjoy the show – might skip it and watch clips afterwards, esp. if La Huppert wins!
