When you’re watching the videos and like Daniel Montgomery is saying why aren’t they nominating every black, gay, trans person for director is just really annoying. Him, with Amanda and Marcus are the worst about this.

Yes, but I also find people who complain about SJW just as annoying.

I hate the term “SJW”, but yeah, people need to stop calling stuff like the Golden Globes sexist for not nominating Greta Gerwig. I’m kind of dreading people calling the Oscars sexist if Lady Bird loses, racist if Get Out loses, or homophobic if CMBYN loses

Give Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar.

I also hate the SJW term, but we need to call them something.  Please come up with a better name, someone.  I usually just say something like “online community”, but that is not entirely fair.

Hopefully I was not too offensive in the slugfests when I said stuff like how I was concerned about my predictions because I was predicting too many white people.

As for the actual issue, on the one hand, I hate when stuff wins awards or gets nominated just because people are trying to be politically correct.  Ultimately though, I do not take too much issue with it because it is not like I generally think that awards nominate the right stuff anyway.  Not sure that I should pick on something just because I can pinpoint the underlying reason behind it.

Do I want to see Greta Gerwig nominated?  No.  Do I think that people are overrating her direction and the movie in general just because she is a woman?  Yes, I do.  But do I want Dunkirk to be nominated for Best Picture?  Ehh.  So why should I be so accepting when white men get nominations that I perceive to be undeserved and upset when women do?  I mean, of course, I would ideally be equally critical of both, but white men have had it easy for so long.  They are due for it to be a little harder for them.  Is Get Out winning an absurd number of Best Picture prizes?  Yes.  Did I agree with past Best Picture choices though?  No.

Film is the most systematically restrictive of all mediums. So the conversation about nonwhite participation isn’t going away. The day where we won’t need it is when the users here stop interrogating nonwhite nominees whenever they’re buzzed into the award season sphere.

I ignore all that bullshit. SJW is a completely boring term, and the blacklash against it just as conniving. Both sides have been diluted with the same old political bias we always get with these things. It’s hot for a year or so, then everyone hates it. Meanwhile Hollywood pretends they give a shit but really they don’t. $$$

Let me just put it in as simple and as blanket a term as I can.

What the Academy decides is the strongest film, regardless of any race, gender or sexual preference, will prevail. If Lady Bird, Call Me by Your Name, or Get Out loses, it does not mean that they are sexist/racist/homophobic. It just means that there was a movie that was better. That is all. Oscar is not So white/so male/so straight. It’s just an opinion and that’s all.

I have never heard of SJW (Social Justice Warrior) and quite frankly I am tired of people using letters as shorthand.

No it doesn’t necessarily mean that there was a movie that was better. It simply means Hollywood chose a different film. Not everyone will agree it was better.

It’s not really about Oscars at all he end of the day anyway. Most of that is Hollywood bullshit. It’s about all sorts of stories being told from the get go.

To them, it’s better. To you, it may not be. That is what I meant.

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted on the forums, but this thread is so disheartening. You’re annoyed individuals are trying to champion movies and performances from individuals normally not recognized by the industry? Obviously the Academy (an institution of power in a powerful industry) is sexist, racists, homophobic, etc because all institions of power have been for far too long. Theses award choices celebrate often mediocre talents over powerful performances from others because the industry has a structure that favors indivuals of inherit privilege. I’d encourage you to expand your mind and reflect on these power structurs than have ignored powerful performances or work by non-white, male and heterosexual individuals and an industry that too often give far more opportunities to those folks. Please don’t hide behind “well they were just better” defense, because it’s subjective and if you are always thinking people of privilege are better maybe something’s wrong there.

I probably won’t change your opinion and didn’t articulate what I wanted to say well, but I hope you think more about it instead of just reflectively complaining
