This is in terms of his acting alone because he seemingly gets a bad rap for it. I’ve just watched First Reformed and that, to me, is the finest work by a leading actor this year, and definitely Oscar worthy (still got a shit ton to see this year so bear with me).

And this goes beyond Reformed. His two Oscar nods for acting are supporting turns, but they still show his range as an actor. First for Training Day, he stays relatively close to the chest against the grand, exuberant machismo of Denzel Washignton’s bad cop Alonzo Harris. We all knew he’d struggle to stay strong amongst the scenery after Denzel chewed it up, but he still made an admirable effort nonetheless.

The second for Boyhood. There are some films in which critics see something civilian filmgoers don’t. And that’s definitely the case for this film. Suffice it to say, it’s a 3 hour long, bland nothingness of a film with incessant characters, mawkish caricatures left and right and the tonal consistency of a melting jello, that is, it can’t work out if it’s a political film, a thriller or the pointless coming of age drama it poses as (it really does injustice to the coming of age genre).

The only thing that I could applaud here was Hawke, who actually showed nuance in his portrayal of a pretty caricaturish “fun loving” dad. He even makes a fine effort to show the growth his character undergoes, and the strained relationships he shares. Not a fantastic Oscar worthy turn, especially since he had years to hone it and develop his character, and most actors only have several months to develop their performance, but one worthy of mention none the less.

His leading turns are where he shines. He was brilliant Born to be Blue, the Before series, Maudie, and other turns I can’t begin to describe. He seems to so effortlessly change his screen presence to the point he is unrecognizble in these turns. He makes it seem effortless though, which is probably why he isn’t given the praise he deserves. Truth be told though, to me he is a fantastic actor worthy of awards.

So what’s your thoughts on Hawke? Is he underrated or is he a shit actor? Please feel free to discuss.

I wouldn’t say he is underrated. He has a total of 4 Oscar nominations and he is acknowledged for both of his acting and writing work which is rare. I don’t think he is overdue of anything either. I mean his career is good and he is talented, but I’m not sure I can look at his filmography and say that he is groundbreaking by any means, and because of that, he is possibly overrated with 4 career Oscar nominations. I mean Tilda Swinton, Lauren Bacall and Jake Gyllenhaal have only one. Not to mention the amazing Jamie Lee Curtis and Mia Farrow have zero nominations. So I’d say he is lucky guy. I don’t see him winning an Oscar tbh.

There are people who think he’s a bad actor? That’s news to me. He’s very underrated IMO and has turned in some sublime performances over the years. Feels like someone who’ll get his due sooner or later

He’s a widely and deservely respected actor who has always leaned more toward art house than mainstream. I don’t see how he’s underrated.

As for Oscars, I can easily see him winning either for a transformative role in the near future or as a late-career acknowledgement twenty years from now, probably for a supporting role.

Maybe not as much on these parts, but he definitely is considered as a better writer and director than actor. To the point where his acting is often overlooked.

A handful… Vinny, that’s NOT a handful. You clearly like him as an actor too then.

Love Ethan Hawke. His performances in Reality Bites, Gattaca, Tape, Training Day, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, and Maudie were all exceptional. Underrated for sure since he should have double the acting nominations for Before Sunset, Boyhood, Born to Be Blue, and should be in SERIOUS awards contention for First Reformed. The early release date infuriates me because (even without seeing everything) he already easily gave one of the best performances this year. Also I wish he was my dad.

Right now I don’t even believe he’s underrated, nonetheless THE MOST underrated actor in Hollywood, but if he does not get a nomination for First Reformed, that would truly be a crime, unless somehow there are 5 other performances as terrific as that this year (which I highly doubt)

I think Ethan Hawks is rated fine? “Reality Bites,” “Before Sunrise” trilogy, “Training Day,” “BTDKYD,” give or take “Boyhood,” I guess. Four Oscar nominations seems about right. I don’t feel like he’s overdue for a win yet. I’ve heard great things about “First Reformed.” It never played in my area, but I’m interested in seeing this.

He receives the credit he deserves. He gives great performances and receives decent praise for said roles. If he were to give a couple truly fantastic and transformative performances that defied all expectations (which First Reformed certainly was), then I would elevate the standard of attention he should be receiving. As of now, I think he’s praised appropriately. An Oscar win down the road is definitely not out of the picture, but he would need a truly fantastic role (or an utterly horrible year) to pull it off.

He’s a fine actor but hardly the most underrated. I’d have nominated him for Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Boyhood but no wins.

THE OSCAR 100 (#40-36): Ellen Burstyn, Katharine Hepburn, Julianne Moore, Ian McKellen and Roy Scheider

First Reform is the transformative role. He’s not a drag performer if you mean weightloss and funny wigs. He’s a strong possibility at a nod.
