It’s destroyed. Nuked, napalmed, scorched earth, meteor obliterating the dinosaurs, deader than a doorknob or a Donald Trump brain wave. Way to wipe out 90 years of tradition in 3 and a half hours of carnage.

So now that is is Best International Film and not Foreign Language film where does that leave British or Canadian films etc. Are they eligible? What prompted the change?

They just changed the title, but the rules stay the same. Countries outside the US can submit films with the majority not in English. Canada and England actually did submit each.

I do think that eventually, International Feature Film won’t be needed anymore, but as others have said, VERY few will reach the success Parasite has done. At least now.

Theý gave honorary or special awards to foreign language films from 1947 to 56 when it officially became a category.
The first official winner was La Strada.

Thanks for the correction, pook; so 63 years of the highest honor a foreign film could achieve was tsunami’d.

It’s ironic you are insulting Trump and literally acting like him in the same post lol.

So what if Toy Story 3 won that year? Or a loved documentary won? Would it create this issue?

Not at all. There won’t be a film with as much popular support as Parasite every year, so the category is still useful for honoring the films the academy wouldn’t otherwise give as much love to. I do think they should exclude Best Picture nominees from this category in the future though. It’s a shame that Parasite dominated this category all year and overshadowed everything else. Same goes for Roma in 2018. International Film was the one win I didn’t get any excitement from, since I knew it would be Parasite. Removing Picture nominees from the equasion would make this category more exciting to predict, give other films a chance to get some recognition, and make this less of a consolation prize.

exactly. International films that go into best picture should be considered ineligible for best international film.

Parasite is overrated and only won because they want a foreign film to breakthrough

No. I will say it will become obsolete once the Oscar Best Picture nominee slate is averaging 50% non-English language films for a few years. Only then will I say, yeah, we can do away with the International Feature Film category now.

This will actually happen IF they eliminate that category. The Academy doesn’t make an effort to nominate some of the films in other categories because the logic is that foreign films have their own entry, and who can blame them?
