There’s very little we could do to decontaminate the racism that still lingers in the Academy. But keeping the Best International Feature Film award and allowing a film like Parasite compete in Best Picture is the best way we can keep our foot on their throats.

You simply don’t get it. The whole aim of the award is to celebrate films from other countries in their own, pure regard. Their cultural experiences, point of views and forms of storytelling are unique that you won’t find in films here in the US. Also a lot of countries outside the US look forward to competing in this category because it’s the only way they could get any recognition and is nearly impossible to penetrate the US market. Some of the best foreign films I’ve discovered was by checking out what films were nominated. You remove that and you’ll strip away the essence and respectability of the Oscars.

I think the inclusion of those films in the other categories instead of enclosing them in just one is actually a better solution for what you’re saying.

Including them in all categories is the right thing to do BUT realistically, with only five nominees per category, that will not always happen. That’s why the International Film category is so important. I started watching foreign films because of Parasite and I used the Oscar nominees to figure out where to start.

It is not obsolete. It is still very important in giving foreign films much needed visibility.

I just love movies. And awards.

I agree. If they want to do that they should increase the number of nominees per category at least to six.
I don’t think it could nor should be terminated right now, but if AMPAS wants to evolve, that should be a change in (a somewhat) near future. Specially when a great number of international names from all the branches are invited yearly to join the Academy; and when the ratings are getting lower and lower each ceremony, a way to rescue that is by opening it more to foreign markets, not by trying to promote it more within the US.
