“The Silence of the Lambs” is often credited as being the first (and only) horror film to win Best Picture at the Oscars, but I have ready a lot of people who are adamant it is a psychological thriller, but not a horror film.

What do you think? Do you consider “The Silence of the Lambs” a horror movie?

More of a thriller I’d say.

I’d say Silence of the Lambs covers a few different genres, but considering the fact that the movie is terrifying, one of those genres is definitely horror.

Firstly, it isn’t the first horror film to win Picture–that would probably be Hitchcock’s Rebecca.

Secondly, yes, it’s a horror film. The intent of it is to horrify, which it does incredibly well. It was rebranded as a “psychological thriller” for the benefit of awards bodies.

Of course. Horror doesn’t mean only slasher flicks.

I voted yes because I consider it to be a mix between horror and thriller. These two aren’t mutually exclusive.

I’ve never viewed it as a horror film. It certainly has elements of a horror film but I find it more a psychological thriller.

I would say it’s a psychological horror movie.

Horror is an expansive genre. While most define it as some antagonist chasing you in the dark, it can definitely be done in broad daylight like Midsommar or Safe starring Julianne Moore. And Misery from the year before is horror too.

The “horror” elements in Silence of the lambs are so downplayed in favor of crime solving and detective work. There’s a few eerie scenes like in the storage room and the body exam but a few creepy scenes don’t make a horror film- especially when they aren’t focused on. Agent Starling isn’t in a state of dread- she’s not worried about her life, she’s focused on solving a crime. The thriller aspects and suspense is turned up and horror downplayed. The Silence of the Lambs is a thriller. Clearly.

Rebecca is in no way shape or form a horror film. There’s absolutely zero horror element in Rebecca.
