Just have some balls and keep it down to 5 nominees, lol. No need to overthink it. Some days I even feel like combining the lead and supporting categories, too.

Holy hell, a full battle royale!!

    (…yeoh would still have won…)

Anyway, about the acting categories, I think it would be an exciting change to have a Leading category, a Supporting category, an Ensemble category, and a Voice Acting category. But that’s just me.

I’m all for this actually, so long as Voice Acting can also encompass Motion Capture performances.

The work of adapting the material requires great care, requires understanding the difference between the medium of the base work and cinema, and often takes advantage of already written texts, uses the critical reception of the base material as a guide to what works and does not work, many times relies on pre-established notions from the public. Adaptation is a work of translation that must be done with great artistic sensitivity. Original scripts need to establish characters and settings from scratch, so they require original, concise ideas that don’t need to meet expectations or be confined to an already made story. They don’t take advantage of tried and tested material and that makes them have more freedom but also have a much greater risk of failure. These two forms are too distinguishable to be placed under the same umbrella.

I mean, depends. There’s a reason some scripts are put in as adapted by some awards and original by other awards.

If it does go genderless, I would prefer there be 10 nominees each in Lead and Supporting (not a fan of the fictional/non-fictional idea). But also, why not just have 2 winners for Lead and 2 winners for Supporting by awarding the two highest vote getters in both categories? They can announce winner 1 and 2, either by alphabetical order, or by random order. Have winner 1 come up and give their acceptance speech and then they announce winner 2 and that person comes up and gives their acceptance speech. I just would rather stay with 4 acting winners than only 2.

    WEAK is the WORD.
It would also be weird if some members of a cast go fiction (Lynch) and others non fiction (Dano etc). I don’t think this is going to work.

That is a weird quirk of this method. Probably the only way it would be viable (and that’s a big if) is if the Academy are flexible with what constitutes a fictional/non-fictional performance. For example, Michelle Williams could be either depending on how you look at it. A fictional character but heavily inspired by Spielberg’s mother to the point where some people called it a spot-on impersonation

Not disagreeing with your winners necessarily but Mescal and Nighy were lucky to be nominated in a weak Lead Actor race. I think Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis would have taken their places based on precursors.

Not sure how the supporting category would have shaken out with 10 nominees though. Dolly de Leon was in a stronger film than Brian Tyree Henry but he is the bigger name. The 10 we got might actually have been the 10 for a combined category aswell

Honestly, this is such an unnecessary change. Non-binary and transgender actors are already allowed to compete in their preferred categories, and reducing the amount of acting nominees or changing the categories to reflect fiction or non-fiction roles would also lead to some category fraud and likely less public interest if less actors are nominated. Removing gender altogether will probably lead to women’s roles being ghettoized as well since the majority of AMPAS members are male. We already see issues with racial and genre diversity as it is, and removing gender altogether will likely just make it even more noticeable.
