No need to go genderless, just no.

Maybe for Original song too.

I wouldn’t mind them going up to 6 in all categories tbh, I don’t think it’s too much.
Personally I’d do away with Best Original Song altogether. If I cared about songs, I’d watch the Grammys. And reduce the shorts categories down to 1. Let them all duke it out for 6 slots

I mean The Daniels just won 3 Oscars in one night while some actors will never win one in their life. They should keep it as is.
They could make it more gender neutral by changing the name of the category to :
Best Performance by an Actor in A Male Role
Best Performance by an Actor in a Female RoleThis means that the only gender that is being recognized is the gender of the character being played rather than the gender of the actor.

Good point. It also occurs to me that if you split the 4 categories by Fictional/Non-Fictional than it might mean the same actor could be nominated 4 times for 4 separate performances. Sounds a bit chaotic 😅
Interestingly I’ve just watched the recent video with Joyce Eng and Chris Rosen where they discuss this very topic.
Joyce’s opinion seems to be that if they do go genderless then they should just stick to 2 categories with 5 nominees each rather than trying to bend over backwards to keep 4 categories.
Chris actually mentioned splitting via fictional/non-fictional but seemed unsure of it after this years Oscars where 4 actors won for original characters.

If anything the Independent Spirit Awards should try out all these revolutionized new categories and see if the opportunities open up for nonbinaries where boxoffice concerns don’t guide the casting.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2023 at 4:56 am #1205374235If i dont recall wrong Frances McDormant got two oscars the year of her third win on acting.
Orson Wells was nominated for acting, directing, screenplay for Citizen Kane and Charles Chaplin too (he was given a special oscar and removed from nominations later on)I think its time that we get rid of male/female division. It is like considering that the effort for a work depends if you are a woman or a man… that is ridiculous
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2023 at 5:55 am #1205374248That would completely lessen the Oscar’s meaning even more than some or the other things they’ve done over the years.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2023 at 7:11 am #1205374287They should just put non binary actors in the Best Actor/Best Supporting Actor categories and keep Best Actress/Best Supporting Actress categories to women only.

The Grammys have been doing gender neutral categories for years. It’s possible. The Oscars would need to find a system that ensures diversity among their nominees. Maybe a panel like BAFTA? Idk.
