Isle of Dogs. I saw it when it came out eight months ago, and it’s still one of my favorite films of the year. Personally, I’m very surprised it’s not getting more Oscar buzz. Not only is it a feat of animation (there’s a video currently making the rounds about how a certain 60 second scene took eight months to film), but it’s an absolutely wonderful movie. I’ve seen it on a few critics “Best Of the Year” lists as well.

Why do you think it’s not getting more buzz? What do you think of the film? Do you think there’s a chance it could get a Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score (Desplat’s work is masterful and really drove the film), or even a Best Picture nomination?

I would love to hear your thoughts. Please sound away!

There’s probably a few reasons. Some quick thoughts:

    – General (growing) fatigue with Anderson’s aesthetics.

    – Lingering controversy stemming from the subject matter and its presentation.

    – Unspoken feelings about Isle of Dogs not living up to the reputation of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

    Again, just some thoughts.

    Dogs is the superior movie.

    Based on what?

Isle of Dogs and Fantastic Mr. Fox drew roughly the same critical ratings so not sure how the former failed to live up to the latter especially when pulling a better box office reward.

@Diet Teridax You pretty much summed up all my thoughts about it! I was very happy to see Desplat got a much-deserved Golden Globes nod. That boosts my hope that the Oscars will nominate him as well.

Currently, I have Isle of Dogs pegged as my wild card pick for Best Original Screenplay. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part, but I hope not…. I guess we’ll see soon enough!

I know it got shortlisted for Visual Effects but I think the other animated film to make the Top 20 Incredibles 2 is far more likely to make the cut.

Actually, the only 2 times an animated film was nominated for Best VFX, they were both stop-motion films. Even when WALL-E got nominations in more categories than any other animated film (6), it couldn’t score one there. I’d say ISLE OF DOGS is far more likely to get an effects nod than the Pixar film.

I was really just brainstorming, which is why I didn’t provide evidence for anything. It’s hard to deny, though, that it doesn’t (and won’t ever) have the reputation Fantastic Mr. Fox has.

I’ve got this masterpiece only getting 3 nominations from the Academy, for Animated Feature, Music Score, and at 100/1 odds for Production Design.

    Hey! Me too!

@Eden That’s the one I saw as well! It’s pretty amazing. Sure gives you an even deeper appreciation and respect for stop motion animation!

Pretty much what happened. It has the same two nominations that MR. FOX had, but this time, it’s the only film among its competition with multiple nods (unlike UP, which won that year).
