I just realized that for the 2016-17 Oscars, two of the slots for Best Supporting Actor were taken by remarkably similar characters.

We had both Jeff Bridges (in Hell or High Water) and Michael Shannon (in Nocturnal Animals) nominated for playing aging, cowboy hat-wearing, mustachioed Texas cops who are willing to go outside the bounds of their job duties to do what they think is the right thing.

This thread is to discuss comparisons and contrasts between these characters and performances.

Who gave the better performance? Who was the more interesting of the two characters? Could either of them have beaten Mahershala Ali had one of them stepped aside and the inevitable splitting of votes between them not happened?

I don’t believe these two necessarily split votes between each other. I would argue that Jeff Bridges gave the superior performance and arguably would have won had he not triumphed for Crazy Heart in ’09. Had Bridges not been nominated, Aaron Taylor-Johnson probably would have received a nod, which would have further detracted from Shannon.

Personally, I would’ve nominated Taylor-Johnson over Shannon. Both of them — along with Jake Gyllenhaal — gave Oscar-worthy performances, but Taylor-Johnson’s performance was easily the best among the three. Hell, had he been nominated, I actually believe he could’ve beaten Ali, given his Golden Globe win.

Taylor-Johnson’s snub was perhaps one of the worst Oscar snubs in recent years. He was the first actor to win the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and then be snubbed for an Oscar nomination since Richard Benjamin (The Sunshine Boys) in 1976.

I prefer Shannon but neither of these performances was ever winning an Oscar.

THE OSCAR 100 (#20-16): Jodie Foster, Martin Landau, Jessica Lange, Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft

The reason why Taylor-Johnson was snubbed (and rightfully so, in my opinion) was that his performance came across as more of a cartoon psychopath rather than a subtle, extremely scary one. If an actor’s performance as a psychopath isn’t on par with psychopath performances that actually won such as Kathy Bates in Misery or Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men, they aren’t getting nominated.

Overall, this was Mahershala Ali’s Oscar to rightfully win, but if I could chose between Jeff Bridges and Michael Shannon, I would have chosen Bridges. A better performance in a better film than Shannon’s.

Im going with Bridges, most likely because I like the movie “hell or high water” better.
