Jessica Chastain just won her long awaited Oscar this year for a Performance that doesn’t live up to her talent. I’m interested to know what you all think Chastain should have won her oscar for and whether she deserved other nominations. I for one am stunned that she only got 2 nominations before Winning on her third for Tammy Faye. She should easily be a 5 time nominee. She should have been nominated for A Most Violent Year, Miss Sloane and Molly’s Game and I would give her wins for Zero Dark Thirty and Miss Sloane. What do you all think.

November 14, 2022 at 5:51 pm #1205151714She should’ve won for The Tree of Life or Take Shelter. She also deserved a nom (and be win competitive) for A Most Violent Year. Easily her best performances.
Scenes From a Marriage is also up there as one of her best, but that’s a miniseries.

While I really like A Most Violent Year, I don’t think her performance is better than Patricia Arquette in Boyhood. She would have a much better and more memorable win than Meryl Streep in 2011, and for that reason, in my opinion, her winning performance should have been for The Tree of Life.November 14, 2022 at 6:03 pm #1205151737Emmanuelle Riva should have won in 2013, but Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty would have been a better winner than Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 14, 2022 at 7:03 pm #1205151865I’ve previously mentioned in a separate thread that I’m personally not a huge Jessica Chastain fan. I didn’t think she deserved either or her Best Actress nominations for Zero Dark Thirty nor The Eyes of Tammy Faye. While I wouldn’t have necessarily awarded her for The Help (Octavia Spencer gave the better performance), but it actually is the only one of Chastain’s Oscar nods I think she can keep. Which is saying a lot given that it’s a movie that I don’t particularly love.
Speaking of Zero Dark Thirty, I actually echo a lot of what Chris Stuckmann said about that movie and Chastain’s performance in his review. While she was good in it, I just didn’t feel a personal connection to her character (although that I attribute more to the writing).

Second. Should have won for Tree of Life but her best performance, to me, was AMVY although I don’t think she could have won in that year. Should have at least been nominated.
Molly’s Game should have been a nomination. While not her fault, I just…have a lot of issues with ZDT so I can’t make any argument for that film in any capacity.
And not a movie but agreed her not even getting a nomination for SFAM, especially considering the pool, was egregious.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 15, 2022 at 3:44 am #1205152186I think the big issue of her victory is that not only she won with a very caricature performance but with a movie that nobody cared, a box office bomb that wasn’t even acclaimed or something, at least Sandra Bullock won for a mediocre movie that was a huge box office hit.

I wouldn’t have given a win from any of her actually nominations.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 15, 2022 at 6:20 am #1205152436She should have been nominated for Take Shelter and Molly’s Game. Out of all her nominations, I feel like she should have won for The Help or Zero Dark Thirty. In my opinion, I personally loved her in Take Shelter, The Help, and Molly’s Game.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 15, 2022 at 9:49 pm #1205155553She won for the right performance. Yes the movie was mediocre but her performance was absolutely deserving. I think a lot of people haven’t seen Tammy Faye and are just going along with Film Twitter groupthink.

She was win-worthy for The Tree of Life and there were performances I would’ve nominated or liked to have seen nominated (Molly’s Game, Miss Sloane), but nothing from her nominated performances which I wouldn’t have given her in the first place tbh.

Basically this. She is talented actress with several great performances. She deserved her Oscar, but honestly, I can’t say that Academy “stole” an Oscar from her, as she was never, arguably even when she won, the best of 5.
