Why has Jim Carrey never been nominated for an Oscar?

He was sensational in Eternal Sunshine.
He was brilliant in The Truman Show.
He was great in Man on the Moon.

He won two Golden Globes (in both comedy/musical and drama) and received a SAG nod.

Hell, I even thought he was nomination-worthy for How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

He should’ve been nominated for both Truman and Man on the Moon. I can understand why not for The Truman Show, sort of quiet performance but so against type that it worked perfectly in an amazing film that did get attention in key categories. But since he was Jim Carrey after all, perhaps some voters weren’t that crazy about him as a possible Oscar nominee. The following year he gives an even better performance but in an uneven movie that they didn’t care about (did anybody?), but considering his SAG nomination for Man on the Moon and the fact that he had proven himself worthy just the year before, it’s still strange that he missed in 99.

For 1998 I would take out Benigni or Hanks, not McKellen, Nolte or Norton who could be the one who “stole” the nomination for him…it’s always the least expected nominee that gets that distinction of being the thief.

For 1999…I never saw Straight Story or Sweet and Lowdown, so those two men would be my choice, maybe if I see them I’ll change my mind. I wouldn’t take away anything from Spacey, Crowe or Washington that year.

In 2004 I could easily put him in over Jhonny Depp, but the narrative for Eternal Sunshine was always “Winslet and Screenplay”, it’s hard to change people’s minds when all they hear are those two things. I doubt anybody was looking elsewhere when it came to that film.

I was the original choice to play the Grinch but they wanted somebody less beautiful

No amount of make-up could ever make you ugly enough to play a live-action Grinch, you Dame!

Carrey was win worthy for both ‘The Truman Show’ and especially ‘Man on the Moon’, which is one of my favorite performances by any actor. He was nomination worthy for ‘Eternal Sunshine’, absolutely, but that was a tough year (even Giamatti got snubbed for ‘Sideways’). It’s really a shame. I really hope he gets another role some day that can finally get him that Oscar.

Of course, there’s a tendency to steer clear of these iconic roles, which only Jim Carrey could do

Dame Judi Dench, you should guest star on Downton Abbey. Emmy love perhaps.

Jim Carrey was definitely snubbed in 1998. Can we kick out that year’s winner? πŸ˜‰

I never understood his raves for Eternal, but he was good in the other two movies you’ve mentioned, I personally wasn’t impressed by him. to give him Oscar nominations, and the fact that he had mainly terrible and shitty movies in his career makes things worst.

What’s the point to tell movie titles, my dear friend? If you think that he had only two bad movies, than you’ll disagree with my list.

    But…

    Kick-Ass 2.

    Yes Man.

    The Number 23.

    Fun with Dick and Jane.

A Serious of Unfortunate Events. (The movie was actually great, but his performance is god-awful – as someone who read the books, he kinda ruined Olaf to me…)

    Bruce Almighty.

    The Majestic.

    Me & Myself & Irene.

    Liar Liar.

    The Cable Guy.

    Ace Ventura.

    Dumb and Dumber.

    The Mask.

so on…. kind of tired to name all these terrible roles & performances & movies πŸ™‚

While i can agree that Ace Ventura,Batman and The Cable Guy are bad movies, and while i also think thta Kick Ass 2 is one of this years worst it seems to me that you hate Jim Carrey because his performances in The Majestic is great and movies so underrated and Mask and Liar Liar ar comic gold. As for him and Academy, he should have won for Truman Show and should have been nominated for Man on the Moon losing to Spacey or Denzel. Year of Eternal Sunshine was tough to get in. He would be my choice but i can understand why he missed that one.

I am not a fan of JIM CARREY’S  acting but i think he has been
nomination worthy one time for  THE TRUMAN SHOW..For me,
that was a brilliant acting job…
Edward Norton was a hot new actor and  AMERICAN HISTORY X
was a bad film but the academy wanted to set Norton’s career off
    after Primal Fear…Norton stole Carrey’s spot….

People are so sexist. We are calling Jim Carrey’s performances as good, comedic-gold and Oscar-worthy, but bitching about Cameron Diaz and Sandra Bullock all the time calling them not serious actresses for doing “silly comedies”. Weird world. Why men have easier way to get recognition than women? I bet if Adam Sandler would do 3-4 great movies in the next few years (as Jonah Hill or Matthew McConaughey did lately) people would call him as great as Meryl Streep. Oops. They hate Meryl Streep here.
