    Hey everyone.

As we all know, Joaquin Phoenix is a pretty good thespian right?

He’s likely to lift the Best Actor Oscar in a few months for his transformative work in Todd Phillips’ Joker. Here’s some questions for you then:

If you could award or nominate the Puerto-Rican born actor an Oscar, what would it be for, and if not, why?
Secondly, what would your top ten (or five, or less, if you’re not up to doing ten) Phoenix performances be?

I’ll answer those questions right now (all personal preference of course):

    1. The Master – Win for Best Actor.
    2. Two Lovers – Win for Best Actor.
    3. Her – Nomination for Best Actor.
    4. The Immigrant – Nomination for Best Actor/Supporting Actor
    5. Gladiator – Win for Best Supporting Actor.
    6. You Were Never Really Here – Nomination for Best Actor.
    7. Walk the Line – Nomination for Best Actor.
    8. To Die For – Maybe a nod for Best Supporting Actor.
    9. Joker – No nomination or win.
    10. Inherent Vice – No nomination or win.

So there you have it. Those are my treasured turns by Phoenix. 8 nominations, three wins. He’s a great actor in my eyes.

How about yours? How would you rank his best performances?

Joker is easily his career-best performance along with The Master. Thinking otherwise is delusional.

All I have are negative thoughts

    1.The Master
    2.Joker
    3.HER

Joaquin Phoenix is on whole another level in “The Master”,it is an outstanding achievement in acting.

Confession Scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman is pure example.

Tbh, I’m not very impressed with his overall filmography. Some movies of his bored me to tears. But here’s my list

    Absolutely loved his acting here:

    1. Gladiator
    2. Joker
    3. Signs
    4. Her

    He was okay in…
    5. Reservation Road
    6. The Village

    I can’t even remember but i watched the movie…
    7. The Master
    8. Walk the Line
    9. Either A Most Wanted Man or A Most Violent Year… i dont remember

I just love movies. And awards.

He’s given at least four better performances than Joker in my opinion; in The Master, Her, Inherent Vice and You Were Never Really Here he was alternatively more spontaneous, moving, surprising, relaxed, subtle, and more. He starts off brilliantly in Joker but the film has a way off over-egging his performance; so many scenes of his painful, uncontrollable laughter start to bring diminishing returns with too little variation, and I couldn’t help thinking this was a conventional effort by his standards (I felt similarly about his Johnny Cash in Walk the Line). Still, his physicality in the role is just right.

His performance in The Master is one of the best performances of the century, hands down, male or female. He’s overrated as shit in Her, playing a sad sack someone like Casey Affleck would be more at home with.

I don’t think Affleck would play someone like Phoenix in “Her”. Affleck is a master at internalising anger and just being tightly coiled and silently intense. He’s also pretty expert at portraying sadness, but a different kind than that of the one in Her.

And there’s not much anger in Joaquin’s performance in Her. On the contrary, its moving in a different way to Affleck’s work. I can’t quite describe it.

“Joker” is probably middle-of-the-pack-ish. Not the best work he’s ever done, and not the worst work he’s ever done. Nothing will ever top “The Master,” I imagine.
