Now that Marriage Story dropped on Netflix, who of these actors do you think deserves the Oscar?

Both deserve the award but I’d give it to Joaquin. I wouldn’t be mad if Adam won though. Both performances are very strong.

Though I would’ve given Phoenix the Oscar in a heartbeat for THE MASTER, I wouldn’t here. Between the two, I found Driver far more moving and powerful (as well as more subtle and unpredictable). Still not sure to whom I’d give it among an entire nominee slate (Pryce is remarkable, too), but between those two, it’s a no-brainer for me.

I think both are deserved, but I would choose Phoenix. I prefer his performance in The Master but I think that has more to do with the script than his ability. I thought Driver was incredible, but I think it’s Phoenix’s time.

What about Phoenix’s character is supposed to be moving or subtle?

I really can’t decide so I didn’t vote. I thought both performances were equal displays of outstanding acting.

Maybe when I see Antonio Banderas’ performance, he will be my tie-breaker.

The fight scene in Marriage Story alone >>>

    So I’ll say Adam.

Driver is better. Only fanboys disagree.

Maybe one could argue you’re the fanboy for thinking driver is the best 😉

Both have subtle and showy performances in different moments of the movie. Both are acting naturally and are convincing. And both roles have their difficulties. That all being said, I think 2 things work in favor of Phoenix:

    1. Screentime. Phoenix is in almost all movie and it’s always using the screentime in his favor.

    2. The overdue factor. Both have been nominated for Oscars before, the only difference is that Phoenix has been nominated 3 times and his first nomination was 19 years ago. Driver, in the other hand, received his first nomination just last year. But please, I don’t consider overdue a factor to say who *deserves* to win, but in this special case, I think it can be a way to break the “tie”.

I mean, seriously. We’ve been belabouring this JvsA since FoReVEr.

Whomever’s behind my vote is with him.

I can’t decide for now. I am behind Phoenix all the way until yesterday when I watched Marriage Story.

    I’ll give it time.

I just love movies. And awards.
