Lol this is more of a curse. NBR only got right one actor this decade (Casey Affleck)

The original poster had something entirely different in mind. We have to stop looking at precursors one by one. It’s meaningless. The NBR is a curse until it isn’t. Driver needs a Casey Affleck narrative. He needs to built momentum. By late December 2016, Casey was ineviatble, having swept the critics. Driver is losing many critics’ groups (incl. NY, NBR, NY Online) while Phoenix is winning some critics. Driver is also a relatively new face while Phoenix is a respected actors’ actor who has delivered so many memorable performances and has been in Oscar-worthy territory before. And above all, Phoenix has the Zeitgeist phenomenon factor, which Driver does not.

Driver could not have won NY Online because he already won for Paterson and they never repeat.

As for NBR, they always choose “alternative” candidates and it is never a top 3 contender. Except for Casey Affleck. In the past this decade they awarded Matt Damon for The Martian (which would never win the Oscar in a million years), Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Oscar Isaac for The Most Violent Year, Tom Hanks for the Post (he didn’t even get a nomination at The Oscars) not to mention of course Adam Sandler this year. If you take a look at the past 10 years or so, it’s been like that.

On only 1 out of 4 acting categories they end up picking one of the frontrunners, like Regina King last year. This year was an an anomaly with two top 3 contenders (Pitt and Zelwegger)

According to Martin Scorsese Driver is the best actor of his generation.

I hate it when people use someone else’s opinion to defend their own. If we’re going to play this game I could vote a million different industry professionals who praised Phoenix’s performance (Moore, Chastain, etc…). But I won’t.

    For Your Consideration

    Best Picture: Parasite
    Best Director: Bong-Joon Ho,
    Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix
    Best Actress: Scarlett Johansson
    Supporting Actor: Al Pacino
    Supporting Actress: Laura Dern
    Adapted Screenplay: Jojo Rabbit
    Original Screenplay: Parasite

The thing is, even if I think Driver delivered a better performance, I never said Phoenix is not a great actor. So go on and post the praise Phoenix got. The guy said Driver always plays himself. Who knows more about this matter (acting) — Scorsese or a random GD user?

I’m sorry, but you’re talking rubbish. Joaquin is one of the best actors working today. His ability to convey emotion is second to none. Driver played Driver in MS.

So you know Driver personally to verify that he’s just “playing himself” in “Marriage Story”?

I know you didn’t. That’s not what I was accusing you of. And no, I won’t cite those tweets, but I will cite this.

Everyone’s mentioning Phoenix, and only a few of them are mentioning Driver. And not onyk are they mentioning Driver after Phoenix, but one of them called him “watchable”, which doesn’t really sound like high praise to me.

There are 6 opinions in the article, 3 prefer Phoenix and 2 prefer Driver. 1 does not mention either of them.

    1) Phoenix

    2) Phoenix

    3) Driver (he mentioned Hanks as well but he is supporting)

    4) Phoenix

    5) Seems to prefer Driver over Phoenix. He says he is “brilliant” (he did not say only “watchable”). He says he thinks Phoenix will win (does not mean he will vote for him) and although he was great, it was just a repeat performance of You Were Never Really Here.

    6) Does not mention either Phoenix or Driver

No matter who “loses” (Driver) there’ll be a loud weeping dirge afterwards.

Having watched Marriage Story, I can safely say Joaquin was better than Adam. Not to say Adam was bad- absolutely not. That scene where he screams death on Scarlett and then breaks down was hands down one of the most real moments I’ve seen in a movie. Magnificent stuff. But Joaquin gave so much to the performance- that staircase scene, when he kills his mother, and the bathroom dance in particular, but EVERYTHING really was terrific. Some could say that Joaquin had opportunities to give a flashier performance than Adam, but I think Joaquin nailed everything down.

It also helps that Joaquin worked extremely well with a (in my opinion) weaker script.

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

Darlings, both are not deserving. Banderas or Murphy should win.

As a famous singer said, "ain't nobody gonna Thatcher, Thatcher, Thatcher!"

Phoenix has one advantage – his film belongs to him. Isn’t he in every scene? Driver has to share the screen with his on-screen (ex) wife. Besides in 21st Century there was only one case of Best Actor winner coming from a movie with Best Actress nomination – Eddie Redmayne and “The Theory of Everything” was pretty much about him all the time which isn’t a case here.

I’m not taking a side, I like the 2 performances too much to pick but Joaquin is gonna be this year’s Oldman and Driver the Chalamet. Joaquin is sweeping.

Redmayne, DiCaprio, Oldman and Malek were sweeping, Phoenix can too. Driver’s nomination is his reward.
