I’m watching The Reader for the first time and saw that Winslet was campaigned at different points throughout the season in the Lead and Supporting categories.
What alternate scenarios do you think could have happened based upon her placements? If she went Supporting at the Oscars who would the 5th nominee for Lead Actress have been? Who would have won if she wasn’t present? Who would she have kicked out of the supporting lineup if she was nominated there and would Winslet have won?

This is one of the oddest incidents in recent Oscar years. The Academy actually went against the advertising, denied the category fraud and nominated her in lead. She really wanted to be nominated in lead for Revolutionary Road and I think was even mad that The Reader was released the same year.

I guess if she had been nominated in supporting things would have played out like at SAG with her taking supporting and Meryl in Doubt winning lead.

I don’t know what would have happened if she had just been nominated as lead for Revolutionary Road and not at all for The Reader. I guess she still would have won based on the Globe win but Revolutionary Road was not a well liked film.

She was supporting IMO. Michael is the true lead of the movie and we see the movie through him. She’s extremely important to the movie but I think is more about Michael and how their love affair shape up his life and future relationships.

She’s a co-lead. So Best Actress in the Razzies because wow what an overblown mess that performance is.

    For Your Consideration:

Supporting. Ralph Fiennes was the co-lead along with David Kross.

If she had campaigned in supporting I would say she’d have won Supporting and Meryl Streep would have won for Doubt (and then Viola Davis would have won for The Help and Michelle Williams would have won for Manchester by the Sea).

The reason I say she would have won for The Reader in supporting is because Penelope Cruz won the BAFTA only when Kate went lead and won for The Reader. Streep competed against Winslet for Revolutionary Road at SAG and won over Winslet.

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")

It’s bittersweet… Doubt’s my favorite performance of Meryl Streep but Penelope just lost for Volver and I do not think she’d have another chance at winning, it was now or never so I’m happy with how things played out that year.

Regarding Kate, both she and Meryl were Weinstein’s girls however I feel like the whole Hollywood and especially him were more interested in making her a first time winner than Streep a 3rd-timer. Oh, and he wanted her to win a lead actress Oscar, that’s why she got the nomination there in the first place.

But wasn’t she mad at him for messing up her chance at winning for Revolutionary Road? Recently she has talked about how she purposely didn’t thank him during her speech.

Michelle Williams still wouldn’t have beat Viola Davis

    I agree ^. I think Davis would’ve won a 2nd Oscar for Fences.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

If Viola had won for The Help she would have gone lead for Fences imo. Unsure if she would have beaten Emma Stone

Davis wouldn’t have won for Fences if she won for The Help. She would have gone Lead for Fences and I doubt she’d have won 2 lead Oscars in such a short space of time.

Whilst imo I disagree with it being third in the Picture race Manchester by the Sea did very well at the Oscars and Williams had both the performance and would have had a strong overdue narrative. It would have been Williams vs Harris.

What would be interesting though is I think Winslet would stand a better chance this year if she won supporting and not lead.

I think Davis would have gone lead for Fences so that she’d have the record as the first African-American woman to have 2 Best Actress nominations.

IMO she should have gone lead for Fences anyway. She’d have beat Stone. Probably not if she had won for The Help but since she didn’t I think she could have easily overtaken Stone. I guess she got screwed once by going lead for a borderline lead/supporting role so she picked the safer route with Fences.

I just don’t see any way you can justify Davis’ placement in supporting. The fact that Michelle Williams went Oscar-less for Manchester by the Sea makes it hurt even more. Plus Stone v Davis v Portman v Huppert would have been an epic battle

Winslet would have been considered the lead of The Reader in any other year. The sole reason she was ever placed in supporting was to avoid competition with Revolutionary Road. Winslet might have been more prominent in the latter, but she was full-blown BAIT in the former. She played Hanna Schmitz with such commitment and intensity that she was able to justify some of the more controversial elements of that film.

Marisa Tomei, for The Wrestler, or Taraji P. Hensen, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were likely the beneficiaries of a Winslet-less category. If things had gone as planned, Cruz would have lost to Winslet, and Streep would have won her third Academy Award for Doubt. The lead actress category would have stayed the same five actresses, with Winslet replacing herself. In hindsight, I’m glad she was able to be rewarded for a leading performance, and Revolutionary Road was not well-liked enough to win any significant awards other than the bizarre Globes. Winslet deserved recognition after such a strong 15 years of outstanding and complex roles. She was award-worthy in at least ten performances, from Sense and Sensibility to being the lead in one of the most popular films of all time. Her win was justified, no matter how you feel about the controversial film.
