- UDo u think any pretty blonde who gave a servicable performance like Basinger in the movie would have the Oscar for it
April 2, 2020 at 11:37 am #1203406623Gloria Stuart should’ve won the Oscar. I know that’s not the answer to your question, but I just wanted to put it out there.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2020 at 11:46 am #1203406643I think the role was always going to get awards attention. I don’t think Basinger is the only person who could have won for it, but her performance goes far beyond serviceable. Watch her eyes in the scene with Russell Crowe on the porch. She was the humanity in a nihilistic world. That’s what voters responded to.

Joan Cusack In & Out
Minnie Driver Good Will Hunting
Julianne Moore Boogie Nights
Gloria Stuart TitanicI almost threw my shoe at the tv when they announced Kim Basinger as the winner because I would have ranked her fifth. I was rooting for Julianne Moore or Joan Cusack.
Debbi Morgan from Eve’s Bayou should have nominated.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2020 at 6:14 pm #1203407233Basinger’s win was a combination of acknowledging her movie and her legacy as a not so great actress doing well who was always a great beauty.

I think Academy voters refused to watch Eve’s Bayou. Consider only white people were acknowledged for Jackie Brown and Amistad.

Their responses to the outrages over the snubs of black actors two years before this show how incredibly myopic they are. Not surprised, given that this is the same group who liked American Sniper more the Selma.

April 3, 2020 at 6:36 pm #1203408869I think she also won because the film was so popular and there were too many men giving good performances that they cancelled each other out. She was the only woman so easy to recognize.
Personally I never really got the acclaim she got. It was one of those performances some people raved about but I just never got it.

The category was pedestrian outside Julianne Moore.

Her performance fits fine in the ensemble. It isn’t like good acting dies when she’s on screen.
ReplyCopy URLApril 4, 2020 at 5:16 pm #1203410147I do feel like her win was more due to a way of the Academy honoring LA CONFIDENTIAL and her character did stand out as being the most human in a sense (sort of like Beatrice Straight in NETWORK). However, I would say she is only solid or adequate in the film at best.
Aside from Julianne Moore and Joan Cusack (which I found that performance to be a perfect comedic turn), I found no real merit in the other three.
Debbi Morgan was robbed; Sigourney Weaver should’ve been there too; and although it’s been a while since I’ve seen it, there was also Sarah Polley in THE SWEET HEREAFTER.
