    Official Poster: https://twitter.com/empiremagazine/status/1445012036170231817?s=21

    Synopsis

Based on the true story that will inspire the world, Warner Bros. Pictures’ “King Richard follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. Two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“Ali,” “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Bad Boys for Life”) stars as Richard, under the direction of Reinaldo Marcus Green (“Monsters and Men”).

Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.

Aunjanue Ellis (“If Beale Street Could Talk,” TV’s “Quantico”) plays the girls’ mom, Oracene “Brandi” Williams, Saniyya Sidney (“Hidden Figures,” “Fences”) stars as Venus Williams, Demi Singleton (TV’s “Godfather of Harlem”) stars as Serena Williams, with Tony Goldwyn (the “Divergent” series, TV’s “Scandal”) as coach Paul Cohen and Jon Bernthal (upcoming “The Many Saints of Newark,” “Ford v Ferrari”) as coach Rick Macci. The ensemble also includes Andy Bean (“IT Chapter Two”), Kevin Dunn (the “Transformers” films, HBO’s “Veep”) and Craig Tate (“Greyhound”).

Green directed “King Richard” from a screenplay written by Zach Baylin. The producers were Tim White and Trevor White under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner, and Will Smith under his Westbrook banner. Isha Price, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Adam Merims, Lynn Harris, Allan Mandelbaum, Jon Mone and Peter Dodd served as the executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Robert Elswit (“There Will Be Blood”), production designers Wynn Thomas (“Da 5 Bloods,” “Hidden Figures”) and William Arnold (“The Hate U Give”), Oscar-nominated editor Pamela Martin (“The Fighter”), and two-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Sharen Davis (“Dreamgirls,” “Ray”). The music is by Oscar-nominated composer Kris Bowers (“Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “A Concerto is a Conversation”).

A Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation, A Star Thrower Entertainment Production, A Westbrook Production, A Keepin’ It Reel Production, “King Richard” is slated for U.S. release on November 19, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max via the Ad-Free plan; it will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.

Smith is coming. Cumberbatch LARPing as a cowboy ain’t winning. The only one that could stop Smith is Washington but MacBeth might not play as well with the voters as King Richard.

Is Beyonce going to take Best Song?

I thought that Billie Eilish was the one to beat in that category.

Being a massive tennis fan, especially the Williams being the reason I got into the sport this was my second most anticipated movie of the year after Dune.

Smith literally embodies Richard Williams. It’s a crowd-pleasing, transformative role. He’s coming… unless the Oscars like TPOTD a lot and it will be a Nomadland scenario. But again, for them to like it A LOT they have to literally reward it BP. King Richards will be the crowd-pleaser that will get the actors branch on board.

Also, nominees I’m feeling safe to say lock:

    • Best Picture
    • Screenplay
    • Actor
    • Supporting Actress

    Potential nominees:

    • Director
    • Song
    • Supporting Actor
    • Editing

After watching that trailer, Beyonce is coming for that Best Original Song nomination and probably the win too.

This is going to be the easiest sweep ever for Actor. It’s starting to feel like Joaquin vs Adam, when it was so obvious Joaquin was going to win yet people were still arguing otherwise.

From an all-guild screening: “This film straight up PLAYS to a crowd. Lots of clapping and cheers throughout. Will Smith is incredible, but notable that a lot of the biggest audience responses went to Aunjanue Ellis. Crowd loved her.’

If Belfast peaks too soon, I really think Ellis could also win.

I would love for Aunjanue to win. She is so underrated…she is low key one of the best actresses around.

We’ll see. If this continues to gain the momentum, it could get 2 noms but SAG Ensemble win is locked, IMO.

This. Joaquin had no competition. People like to invent upset scenarios but that one was unbeatable.

Yep, Smith is sweeping. The role is everything, he’s raved, the movie’s eevrything, fingers crossed for the director, etc. Even MacDenzel won’t stop this train.

SupActress is really open when it comes to the winner. While some nomination locks are obvious (including Ellis), the winner changes daily. So Ellis could win.

Lol, I was browsing these forums that year. It was hilarious how there were so many Adam fanboys that kept saying Phoeonix would never win, right up to the first awards because Joker wasn’t as critically acclaimed of a movie… didn’t matter. The performance, narrative and hype behind it was enough. Nothing about Cumberbatchy screams Joker. It’s a fantastic performance, but so is Smith.

It won the Audience Award at the Chicago Film Festival beating Belfast, among others. I really think this could be another Green Book situation — but even better critically, and with awards in the running to win Actor, Supporting Actress and Song.
