I thought this movie was pretty solid. Great cast, even though not all of them got a whole lot to do. Chris Evan’s, Daniel Craig, and of course Ana de Armas were the standouts for me. Very strong production design, cinematography, and editing as well. The story was fantastic in the first 2 acts of the film: constantly subverting expectations in the best ways and turning the entire whodunnit genre on it’s head. Where the film lost me somewhat was in the 3rd act. I felt that the direction the story was going in before was much more interesting and unique, and then that final reveal turned it into a bog-standard mystery flick. That’s the conundrum with constantly trying to subvert your audiences expectations: if you overdue it you reach a point where the expectations are met. So unfortunately this is another film like Wonder Woman and A Star is Born where a disappointing ending took it from a great film to just a really good one.

I loved this movie! I was kinda nervous about seeing it despite the praise because I wasn’t really a fan of The Last Jedi. Ana de Armas was phenomenal and I would love to see her get in at the Globes at least. Is she considered a lead or supporting?

    She’s considered a lead.

That would be complete and total fraud. She’s not even borderline supporting.

Despite being a stellar ensemble, I don’t see this getting any individual nominations aside from Ana de Armas and Daniel Craig at the Globes. I guess de Armas is an outside chance since she gets a great showcase and her category is pretty empty, but I still wouldn’t bet on it. Craig gives a great performance, but he’s a secondary lead and his category is incredibly stacked right now, so I can’t see him making it. Chris Evans is arguably the biggest supporting standout and he gets to wonderfully play against type, but it’s not the type of performance I can see voters going for, especially since he’ll likely suffer from “slap the stud syndrome”, and his category has too many contenders alright now anyway.

This was a fun movie. I’m normally harsh on comedy genre hybrids being considered comedy at the Globes, but this was funny. I predicted the ending very early, but the ride and swerves to get there were quite fun.

Daniel Craig’s performance is one big joke and I love it.

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
Best International Film: Weathering With You, Parasite

Yeah so imo this was an incredibly fun watch and it doesn’t escape me the high quality of writing, acting, and directing it takes to make a film like this work as well as it does, but I wasn’t really blown away by it as some of you were. Strong performances from all of the cast, Ana de Armas was the standout for sure but I also really loved Jamie Lee Curtis in her limited screentime. I guess overall I need to think on it some more but I don’t think this is the type of film that would necessitate any awards attention although a Screenplay nomination wouldn’t hurt.

I’m just a huge fan of Rian Johnson as a writer. I watched Brick and thought hmm he’s good. Then I stumbled upon him again in Brothers Bloom that I went to see for both Rachel Weisz and Rinko Kikuchi. I don’t think many people saw that film but I loved it.
I hope he does well with Knives Out and I hope he puts some challenging elements to the Star Wars endless sagas.

Honestly Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc has potential to have his own Mystery/Detective franchise.

I didn’t want to say it cause I thought it could ruin the surprise about this character, but now that someone else said it, I 100% agree. I’m guessing any future stories with him would likely be more from his point of view, unlike this.

i just finished watching this and totally love it. like mentioned, it’s hard to really single out any one performance for an awards but as an ensemble, they are quite good.

i read that rian johnson said if the reception is good, he might wanna do another series with daniel craig’s detective benoit blanc taking the helm again but with a different cast.

Interesting responses here. I found this to be pretty bland, and rather unfunny, unfortunately. And the editing was atrocious!

Hey, I’ve a question. I recently saw some materials with Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and Michael Shannon talking in character, I guess, about themselves right to the camera. It looks like part of the movie when characters were introduced but those scenes were NOT included in the film I saw in the cinema. Is it the same in US version (if not, then it’s the same version I guess).

    Favorite little moments:
Benoit singing “Losing My Mind” in the car
JLC’s character refusing to dance with her drunk sister-in-law
Final confrontation with 2 characters lying on the ground “Oh s*it”
Glee of the third policeman here and there – underrated job from this actor, I don’t even remember his name
